The speculation around why Vitor Belfort was pulled from UFC 122 is over.  Belfort will finally get his title shot against Anderson Silva and it could come as quickly as January 1.  Belfort was originally scheduled to face Yushin Okami next month at UFC 122.  Yesterday, the news was broke that he was pulled from this card and replaced by Nate Marquardt.  Today, Dana White announced via his twitter account that Belfort was not injured and he would be fighting Silva next.

The UFC 122 main event between Marquardt and Okami will still have title implications.  The winner of this fight will go on to face the winner of the Belfort vs Silva fight.  There is no time table set for the fight between the two winners.

All of this has happened on the heels of the news that Chael Sonnen failed a drug test at UFC 117 when he beat up Silva for five rounds before tapping out to a triangle choke.  Sonnen was flagged on September 2, 2010, for possible steroid use and a second test results, revealed on September 14, 2010, confirmed the positive result.  The California State Athletic Commission has suspended Sonnen for one year and fined him $2500.  Sonnen has thirty days to appeal this ruling.  Sonnen is set to make his first public comments about this incident tomorrow night on ESPN’s MMA Live.
