Don’t Sleep on Cruz vs Benavidez II Josh Davis May 23, 2011 Events, Previews WEC 50 on August 18th offers fans one of their best cards of the year and the main event for the Bantamweight title between champion Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez will surely offer fireworks. This is a rematch from WEC 42 in which Cruz was able to use his technical striking to work his way to a unanimous victory. Cruz was able to keep the fight on the feet when he wanted to and he was able to take Benavidez down and control him on the ground when he wanted to, thus nullifying Benavidez’s submission skills. From the opening bell Cruz was able to dictate where this fight took place and he completely outworked Benavidez to the victory. That was a year ago and both fighters look to the future and do not worry about that past. Since that fight, Cruz went on to defeat Brian Bowles at WEC 47 to win the Bantamweight Championship. Benavidez will be Cruz’s first title defense. Benavidez looks to avenge his only pro loss and take Cruz’s title at the same time. Since their last fight, Benavidez has been on a two fight terror with a tko stoppage over Brazilian Jiu Jitsu expert Rani Yahya at WEC 45 and a submission victory over former pound for pound great Miguel Torres at WEC 47. The victory over Torres earned him the rematch with Cruz. Stylisticly, this is a good match up for Cruz. He will be able to use his height and reach advantage to work his striking to keep Benavidez on the outside and help set up his take downs. He will also make sure to use his length and reach to keep Benavidez from taking him down. Benavidez will have to be able to work his way inside and either get a take down so that he can work his submissions or work the clinch and some dirty boxing to nullify Cruz’s reach and striking advantage. If Benavidez is not able to get this fight to the ground, he is going to have a tough time winning the stand up war. No matter where this fight takes place, on the feet or on the ground, it has the potential to be the fight of the year for the WEC. Cruz wants to get his first title defense and Benavidez is looking to avenge his lone professional loss and take Cruz’s title at the same time. This certainly is going to be an exciting fight and ones that fans do not want to sleep on.
