Vitor Belfort has been pulled out of the main event against Yushin Okami. Not to worry fight fans, because Nate “The Great” Marquardt has agreed to step in and fight Okami. It has not yet been determined if this will still be a number one contenders match but with Marquardt coming off of a victory at Fight Night 22 against Rousimar Palhares it would make sense for the winner of this fight to fight Anderson Silva for the middleweight title in February.

On paper this has the makings of a very exciting fight as these two fighters match up very well against each other. Both are very well rounded fighters that like to use their striking abilities to open up the rest of their arsenals. Okami, who has gone 11-2 in the UFC with his two losses coming from Rich Franklin at UFC 72 and Chael Sonnen at UFC 104, has been widely criticized for not being an exciting fighter. Though Okami might not always get the finish, he is a very dangerous opponent for anyone in the division, not to mention the fact that he holds a win over Anderson Silva. Marquardt, 9-3 in the UFC, is a fan favorite and comes into every fight looking for a finish. Marquardt has an aggressive style that fight fans love to see.

Okami has good striking and wrestling ability and will attempt to out-strike Marquardt on the feet to set up his takedowns. Once the fight is on the mat, Okami will use his wrestling skills to work some ground and pound and try to earn the victory either through a finish or decision. Marquart will welcome that strategy. He will use his striking to set up the rest of his game plan. If the fight stays on its feet, Marquardt will have the advantage. Once the fight goes to the ground Okami probably has the advantage in a wrestling match. However, Marquardt should be able to neutralize Okami’s wrestling with his own wrestling skills as well as his superior Jiu Jitsu skills.

No matter where this fight goes it should be exciting as both fighters are very well rounded and will be able to take the fight to many different locations. Both fighters have an edge over one another in certain aspects but for the most part they match up very evenly. Even though Belfort was forced to withdraw due to injury, the main event of UFC 122 and fight fans will not miss a beat because Yushin Okami vs Nate Marquardt has the potential to be one of the best fights of the year.
