UFC Fight Night 22 will be a big night of fights and not just for the fans.  The main event of the evening will have a significant impact on the middleweight division as Nate “The Great” Marqaurdt looks to get back on the road towards a championship when he faces off against Rousimar Palhares. Marquardt, who has not competed since his February loss to Chael Sonnen, is looking to get back to proving to the world that he is the best in the division and Palhares is standing in his way.  A win for Marquardt will get him back to his winning ways and back in the title hunt.  A second straight loss for him would make it very hard for him to earn another title shot anytime soon. The co-main event between Efrain Escudero and Charles Oliveira will have an impact on the lightweight division. Escudero, who defeated Dan Louzan in his last fight at UFC 114 in May, looks to continue his winning streak.  A second straight win will help him continue to move up the ladder.  Oliveira looks to stay undefeated and continue his rise in the UFC’s lightweight division.  In addition to the co-main event, the rest of the televised fights will also have a significant impact on the lightweight division as Jim Miller takes on Gleison Tibau and Cole Miller takes on Ross Pearson.

Main Event

Nate Marquardt vs Rousimar Palhares - Both fighters hold black belts in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu but Palhares would have the edge if this was a jiu jitsu match.  However, this is not a jiu jitsu match it is a MMA fight and Marquardt will have the advantage in most aspects of this fight.  Marquardt has better stand up and better wrestling then Palhares and he will look to exploit these advantages.  He will look to use his stand up to keep the fight on the feet as well as dictate the pace.  In addition to dictating the pace of the fight he will use his stand up to set up his wrestling and take Palhares to the mat for some ground and pound.  Palhares on the other hand will look to get inside and take Marquardt to the ground any way that he can.  Once on the mat he will attempt to work his submission game.

Prediction: Marquardt should be able to dictate the pace of this fight and determine where it will take place.  Marquardt wins this fight by TKO in the second round.

Co-Main Event

Efrain Escudero vs Charles Oliveira - Escudero is a fighter that will never quit.  He will continue to come at you with everything he has, regardless of whether or not he is winning the fight.  Olivera, however, is a very well round fighter that is good both on his feet and on the ground.

Prediction: This is going to be another tough fight for Escudero.  He will have to rely on his never say die attitude to get the victory. Escudero wins a decision.

Jim Miller vs Gleison Tibau - Both fighters are ground specialists and will want to get the fight to the mat and work submissions.  Tibau is one of, if not the biggest lightweight in the division, and he will certainly need to use his size against a very crafty Miller.  Miller will use his striking to help him get this fight to the ground.  Miller is very effective from both the top and bottom positions and will always be working for a submission.

Prediction: On paper this fight could go either way.  Stylistic, they both match up very well.  The only distinct advantage between the two will be with the size of Tibau.  Size however will not be enough to win this fight.  Miller wins by submission in the second round.

Cole Miller vs Ross Pearson - This could be a fight of the night candidate.  Miller should have a significant advantage if eathe fight goes to the ground and this is certainly where he wants the fight to be.  Miller, being the much taller fighter, will look to use his reach to keep Pearson on the outside and allowing him to work for a takedown.  Once on the ground Miller will work for a submission.  Pearson will attempt to use his superior striking skills and punching power to win this fight.  Pearson carries knock out power in both hands and is one punch away from winning any fight.

Prediction: Miller is a very tough opponent for any fighter in the lightweight division because of his length.  This alone will not be enough of an advantage to win this fight.  Pearson wins by TKO in the second round.

UFC Fight Night 22 is stacked with fights that have potential to win the fight of the night award.  In addition to the potential of being one of the most exciting fight cards of the year, every fight will have an impact on their respective divisions  Regardless of how these fights play out they will all make waves in the future of the UFC.
