UFC 138 gets Velasquez-Dos Santos, likely in San Jose

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is pursuing Nov. 19 as the date that heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will make his first title defense against once-beaten Junior Dos Santos at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, company chairman Lorenzo Fertitta said Thursday.

Velasquez hasn’t fought since October, when he upset champion Brock Lesnar at Honda Center in Anaheim by first-round TKO. Velasquez underwent shoulder surgery after the fight, forcing the layoff.

His first defense will be stout, given how Dos Santos dominated former interim champ Shane Carwin at UFC 131 in Vancouver.

‘Pato’ Carvalho Joins UFC, Faces Alcantara in Rio

Yuri Alcantara will fight on home soil at UFC 134 against featherweight veteran and fellow UFC newcomer Antonio “Pato” Carvalho.

Despite an initial report that Carvalho was a replacement for Mackens Semerzier, the Alcantara-Semerzier bout was never agreed upon.

Headlined by a UFC middleweight title clash between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Yushin Okami, UFC 134 will take place from HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Ryan LaFlare replaces injured Yuri Villefort at Strikeforce Challengers 16

An injury has knocked a second Villefort off this month’s Strikeforce Challengers 16 event.  A day after injuries forced the cancellation of the Danillo Villefort vs. Antwain Britt main-card bout, injured preliminary-card fighter Yuri Villefort (6-0) also has been forced off the June 24 card.

Promotional newcomer Ryan LaFlare (6-0) has stepped in as a replacement and now meets welterweight Travis Bush (5-2-1).

Strikeforce Challengers 16 takes place at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., and the night’s main card airs on Showtime.

Villefort recently underwent knee surgery because of the injury.
