Injury Forces Phil Davis Out of UFC 133 Main Event, Evans Awaits New Opponent

Phil Davis has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 133 main event fight against Rashad Evans due to a knee injury.  Reportedly, both Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida were offered the fight, but as of now, both have declined.

UFC 133 takes place at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on August 6.


CroCop, Nelson on tap for UFC 137

Heavyweights Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Roy “Big Country” Nelson are rumored to meet at UFC 137.

Filipovic revealed the fight during an interview with Croatian sports source Gol.

UFC 137 is slated for October 29 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz.

Nate Marquardt’s Suspension Lifted by Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission

PSAC Executive Director Greg Sirb revealed Wednesday that former UFC middleweight contender Nate Marquardt is no longer under suspension.  The commission has received all the necessary paperwork and testing, and after a review, Marquardt is able to fight again.

Marquardt had undergone medically prescribed treatments for low testosterone, but his levels spiked to a height that the commission could not allow him to fight, and he was subsequently pulled from his welterweight bout against Rick Story on UFC on Versus 4 and was released from the promotion shortly thereafter.


‘Cacareco’ Released by UFC

Middleweight Alexandre “Cacareco” Ferreira has been released from the UFC.  Ferreira was scheduled to meet Rousimar Palhares at UFC 134, but was recently removed from the fight and replaced by Dan Miller.

Ferreira’s manager, Josef Borges, acknowledged Tuesday that the Brazilian submission specialist was released by the UFC after refusing to sign a bout agreement to fight Palhares.

Louis Taylor out; Anthony Smith faces Ben Lagman at Strikeforce Challengers 17

Louis Taylor has suffered an injury late in training camp and has been forced to withdraw from a planned Strikeforce Challengers 17 contest with Ben Lagman (6-1).

In his place steps Anthony Smith (12-7), and the two will now meet on the evening’s preliminary card.

Strikeforce Challengers 17 takes place July 22 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. The night’s main card, including a trilogy headliner between Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker, airs on Showtime.


Horodecki Signs with Bellator, Debuts July 23 in Ontario

Former WEC lightweight Chris Horodecki has signed with Bellator Fighting Championships and will debut against Chris Saunders at Bellator 47.

Bellator 47 goes down July 23 at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, Canada.  The event features both of the company’s Summer Series featherweight tournament semifinals.

Heavyweights Neil Grove and Zak Jensen clash at Bellator 47

A heavyweight bout between UFC and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Neil Grove (10-3-1) and “The Ultimate Fighter 10″ cast member Zak Jensen (10-6) is slated for Bellator 47.

Bellator 47 is the first incursion onto Canadian soil and the event’s main card airs live on MTV2.

Grove vs. Jensen will be a part of Bellator 47’s MTV2-televised main card.


Brunson vs. Sayers planned for “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson” prelims

Middleweights Derek Brunson (7-0) and Lumumba Sayers (4-1) are the latest targeted additions to “Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson.”

The event takes place July 30 at Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The bout is slated the for night’s preliminary card.

The event’s main card airs live on Showtime, and while broadcast plans haven’t yet been announced for the preliminary card, it is expected to air in some form.


Strikeforce Challengers 18 Fight Card Gets Danillo Villefort vs. Nathan James

A middleweight bout between Danillo Villefort and Nathan James has been scheduled for Strikeforce Challengers 18 on Aug. 12 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

Villefort’s management team at Authentic Sports Management confirmed the fight on Wednesday.

Strikeforce: Challengers 18 features a main event pitting UFC veteran Jorge Gurgel against Joe Duarte.


Reagan Penn to Make MMA Debut on ProElite’s Return in August

Reagan Penn, the younger brother of UFC star BJ Penn, will make his MMA debut on the Aug. 27 ProElite show at Blaisdell Arena in Hawaii.

No opponent has been signed to fight Penn, who will compete as a welterweight.

Penn, a highly-decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, has never competed in an amateur or pro MMA bout.

Familiar names like Andrei Arlovski and Kendall Grove are expected to compete on the card. This would mark ProElite’s first show since Oct. 2008.
