Each day, The MMA Corner will provide a recap of event announcements, fight matchups, and injuries/cancellations from throughout the world of MMA.

Thiago Alves welcomes unbeaten Papy Abedi to the Octagon at UFC 138

Alves has fought many of the best the UFC’s welterweight division has to offer, but now he’ll welcome a newcomer to the Octagon.  Abedi is an 8-0 prospect from Sweden, but he’s never faced someone of Alves’ caliber.  We’ll find out what Abedi is made of on Nov. 5 when the UFC visits England for UFC 138.

Vagner Rocha and Cody McKenzie square off at UFC Fight Night 25

“Battle on the Bayou” added another bout to its lineup, as submission specialists Rocha and McKenzie will clash in lightweight action at the Sept. 17 event. Rocha will look to pick up his first win under the UFC banner after a loss to Donald Cerrone in his promotional debut.  Meanwhile, McKenzie seeks to bounce back from his first career setback, a January loss to Yves Edwards.

DaMarques Johnson meets Clay Harvison at UFC Fight Night 25

The two welterweights have verbally agreed to a meeting at the Sept. 17 Fight Night event.  Both fighters are TUF alum who have stuck around with the UFC, but Johnson probably needs a win here to keep his UFC career alive.

Nick Ring fights Tim Boetsch at UFC 135

UFC officials announced the addition of a middleweight contest between Ring and Boetsch to its Sept. 24 event, set to take place in Denver.  Ring is an undefeated 12-0, with wins in his first two Octagon appearances, while the 13-4 Boetsch is 2-1 in his current stint with the organization.

Joey Beltran battles Stipe Miocic at UFC 136

Beltran has been in some wars in the Octagon, and now he’ll get to welcome an undefeated newcomer to the UFC when he faces Stipe Miocic at the UFC’s Oct. 8 event in Houston.  The 6-0 Miocic brings a wrestling background and a Golden Gloves championship to the cage, but Beltran will represent his toughest test yet.

Bart Palaszewski fights Tyson Griffin at UFC 137

Palaszewski will drop to 145 pounds to face another recent lightweight-turned-featherweight in Griffin.  The two ex-lightweights will collide at UFC 137 in Las Vegas on Oct. 29.  Griffin (15-5) shifted to featherweight following a three-fight skid at 155 and earned a unanimous decision in his 145-pound debut against Manny Gamburyan.  Palaszewski had won three straight fights before losing a split decision to Kamal Shalorus in the final show held under the WEC banner.  He was to make his UFC debut against Gleison Tibau before an injury caused the scrapping of that contest.

Tim Credeur meets Brad Tavares at UFC 137

It’ll be TUF 7 alum versus TUF 11 alum when Creduer faces Tavares at the Oct. 29 event in Las Vegas.  Credeur will look to pick up his first win inside the Octagon in more than two years after dropping a decision to Nate Quarry and losing via TKO in under a minute against Ed Herman.  Meanwhile, Tavares will seek to bounce back from his first career loss, a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Aaron Simpson at UFC 132.

Anthony Njokuani faces Paul Taylor at UFC 138

The recently announced Nov. 5 UK event is coming together quickly.  In addition to several other fights announced for the event over the past 24 hours, a lightweight fight between Njokuani and Taylor is in the works.  At least one fighter has already agreed to the matchup.

John Hathaway targeted for UFC 138 fight

He might not have an opponent yet, but according to sources, the British fighter will compete at the Nov. 5 event in Birmingham, England. The welterweight recently bounced back from his first career loss to edge out Kris McCray via split decision at UFC Fight Night 24.

Ryan Ford signs with Bellator, likely to debut in October

Ford has long been a top welterweight prospect, but he credits his dark past with preventing him from finding a home in a major promotion outside of Canada.  Bellator has decided it’s willing to give him a chance, signing the 16-3 fighter to a contract.  Ford is likely to debut with Bellator in his native Canada this October, and a win could earn him a spot in a future welterweight tournament.

Lavar Johnson out, Shawn Jordan in against Devin Cole at Strikeforce Challengers 17

We’re only two days away from the event, and yet we have a late change.  Johnson suffered a knee injury that, on top of a nagging groin injury, forced him to withdraw from the bout.  Stepping in to take Johnson’s place will be Bellator veteran Shawn Jordan.

Lyle Beerbohm withdraws from Strikeforce bout with Gesias Cavalcante

In another shuffle to an upcoming card, Lyle Beerbohm is out of his featured preliminary card matchup with Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante.  The fight was scheduled to top the prelims of the July 30 “Fedor vs. Henderson” card from Strikeforce.  Instead, “JZ” will lock horns with former King of the Cage champion Bobby Green.  Before being shifted to the Chicago card, Green had been slated to face Milton Vieira at Strikeforce Challengers 18 on Aug. 12.

Roy Jones Jr. to fight Derrick Mehmen at Strikeforce Challengers 18

The name catches the eye, but we’re not talking about the star boxer.  This Jones Jr. is a light heavyweight sporting a 5-1 record with all of his wins coming via either knockout or submission.  He’ll face the 11-3 Mehmen at the Aug. 12 Challengers 18 event in Las Vegas.

Kikuno to defend lightweight belt against Hirota at “Deep: 55 Impact”

The 15-3-2 Katsunori Kikuno will put his Deep lightweight crown on the line at “55 Impact” on Aug. 26 in Tokyo.  He’ll defend the belt against Mizuto Hirota (12-4-1).  Kikuno has only suffered two losses since 2006, coming against top lightweights Gesias Cavalcante and Eddie Alvarez.  He’s currently on a two-fight winning streak that includes a unanimous decision win over Daisuke Nakamura at the May 29 Dream event.  Hirota will fight for the first time since breaking his arm in a submission loss to Shinya Aoki at the end of 2009.

Sara McMann and Tonya Evinger agree to meet at Titan FC 19

McMann, the first female wrestler from the US to earn an Olympic silver medal, has finally found a high-profile opponent and a big stage on which to ply her trade.  A bout between the 2-0 McMann  and EliteXC veteran Tonya Evinger (8-5) is in the works for the July 29 Titan FC 19 event in Kansas City, Kan.  McMann made her pro debut in May and has finished both of her opponents in the first round, with neither fight lasting beyond two minutes.

Nick Diaz finishes 36th in triathlon

It might not be fight news, but it does involve a high-profile fighter.  The next man to challenge Georges St-Pierre’s claim to the welterweight throne competed in the 30th annual Donner Lake Triathlon in Truckee, Calif., finishing 36th out of 292 entrants. Diaz outdid the other high-profile athlete in the competition, former MLB outfielder Eric Byrnes, who finished 76th.
