Cruz defends belt against Johnson at UFC on Versus 6

Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz will defend his title against Demetrious Johnson at UFC Live on Versus 6, UFC president Dana White confirmed Thursday night.

The event, which will air live on Versus, takes place Oct. 1 from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

This will mark the first UFC title fight broadcast on cable television since Quinton “Rampage” Jackson fought Dan Henderson at UFC 75 in Sept. 2007.

Faber battles Bowles at UFC 139

After failing in his attempt to secure the bantamweight belt at UFC 132, former WEC featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber will take on former WEC bantamweight champ Brian Bowles at UFC 139.

Both fighters have dropped bouts to current champion Dominick Cruz and are both looking for another shot at the title.

UFC 139 is expected to take place Nov. 19 from the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Calif. and is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior Dos Santos.

Johnson vs. Sass added to UFC on Versus 6

Lightweights Michael Johnson and Paul Sass will meet on the UFC on Versus 6 card.  Johnson, a powerful wrestler, finished second on the twelfth installment of “The Ultimate Fighter.  Sass hails from England and is a known as a submission specialist.

The event takes place Oct. 1 from the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

Downes meets Nijem at UFC 137

Another TUF runner-up will be in action soon, as Ramsey Nijem will drop to lightweight to take on Danny Downes at UFC 137.  UFC president Dana White confirmed today.

UFC 137 takes place Oct. 29 from Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas and is headlined by a welterweight title bout between champion Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz.

UFC 138 card taking shape with four additional fights

The Nov. 5 UFC 138 card slated for Birmingham, England continues to fill up with fights.

England’s own Paul Taylor will battle Anthony Njokuani in  lightweight scrap.

In another 155 lb slugfest, Liverpool’s Terry Etim will fight Edward Faaloloto.

Veteran Michihiro Omigawa will take on Jason Young in a featherweight duel.

Also on tap is a welterweight matchup between James Head and Mark Scanlon.

Bobby Green to Make Strikeforce Debut Against Gesias Cavalcante

Former King of the Cage lightweight champion Bobby Green will make his Strikeforce debut earlier than initially planned, replacing Lyle Beerbohm against Gesias Cavalcante at the July 30 Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson card near Chicago.

Green had been matched with Milton Vieira at Strikeforce Challengers 18 on Aug. 12 until a substitute was recently needed due to an injury to Beerbohm.

The lightweight bout will be on the top of the preliminary portion of the card.

Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs. Yoel Romero slotted for Sept. 10 Strikeforce event

A light-heavyweight bout between former champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (10-3) and newcomer and Olympian Yoel Romero (4-0) will be part of September’s “Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals” event.

It’s not clear if it’ll be part of the Showtime-televised main card of the Sept. 10 event, which takes place at U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati.

Curt Warburton released from the UFC

British-based lightweight Curt Warburton has been released from the UFC.

The fighter posted the news on his personal Twitter account.

The release comes following a 1-2 stint inside the Octagon.  Warburton was most recently defeated by Joe Lauzon at UFC on Versus 4 on June 26.

Nelson vs. Wetherspoon, Newton vs. Shivers co-headline Shark Fights 18

Shark Fights 18 takes place Aug. 20 and will features lightweights Shane Nelson (13-5) vs. Aaron Wetherspoon (8-3) and light heavyweights Emanuel Newton (15-6-1) vs. Ricky Shivers (10-5-1).

The event will grace John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Reno, Nev. The event airs via delay on Fuel TV and marks the promotion’s debut in Nevada.
