UFC-FOX deal official announcement expected for Thursday

FOX executives are in Los Angeles for a press conference scheduled for Thursday.  UFC president Dana White is also in town, and word is that some of the UFC’s top stars, including Georges St-Pierre, Rashad Evans and Frankie Edgar, have been summoned to the City of Angels.  All signs point to the two entities making an official announcement on a reported multi-year deal that would land the UFC on network airwaves and bring The Ultimate Fighter franchise to the FX network.

Martin Kampmann meets Rick Story at UFC 139

The UFC today announced that welterweights Martin Kampmann and Rick Story will square off at UFC 139, which takes place in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 19.  Both 170-pounders will look to rebound from recent losses.  Kampmann is on a two-fight skid, with defeats at the hands of Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez, while Story seeks to bounce back from a decision loss to Charlie Brenneman.

Maldonado welcomes Rosa to the UFC’s light heavyweight ranks at UFC Live 6

Aaron Rosa suffered defeat in his Octagon debut at the hands of heavyweight Joey Beltran, but now he’ll test the waters at 205 pounds.  The UFC today announced that Rosa’s first opponent at light heavyweight will be Fabio Maldonado.  The two will meet at UFC Live 6, scheduled for Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C.  Maldonado picked up a win in his UFC debut over James McSweeney to move his winning streak to 11 fights, but then lost a decision to Kyle Kingsbury in his sophomore outing with the organization. The fight will be part of the Oct. 1 event’s preliminary action.

Bellator bantamweight champ Makovsky to fight Ryan Roberts in non-title tilt

Bellator’s inaugural bantamweight kingpin Zack “Fun Size” Makovsky will again compete for the organization this October, it just won’t be in a championship bout.  The titleholder will instead take part in a non-title fight against UFC veteran Ryan Roberts.  It marks the second consecutive non-title affair for Makovsky since he captured the gold.  The bout will take place Oct. 15 at Bellator 54 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Rick Hawn out of Bellator welterweight tourney with knee injury

Rick Hawn has withdrawn from his Sept. 10 bout with Ben Saunders due to a knee injury.  The fight, set for Bellator 49, was to be an opening round bout in Bellator’s latest welterweight tournament.  Hawn, who started his career a perfect 11-0, made it to the tournament finals in his first go-around with Bellator before losing a close split decision to Jay Hieron.  There’s no word yet on who will replace Hawn in the tourney bracket.

Three fights announced for Strikeforce Challengers 19

Strikeforce today announced three bouts for its Sept. 23 Las Vegas event.  The card will feature a light heavyweight clash between Lorenz Larkin and Virgil Zwicker.  In heavyweight action, Lavar Johnson returns to action against former LSU football player Shawn Jordan.  And in the lightweight division, Ryan Couture squares off with Maka Watson.
