Jake Shields to remain in UFC Fight Night 25 headliner

Despite his father’s passing on Tuesday, Jake Shields has decided to go on with his scheduled fight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 25.  Shields will face Jake Ellenberger in the headlining contest of the Sept. 17 event, which takes place in New Orleans.

Bellator announces heavyweight tourney quarterfinal pairings for Bellator 52

Bellator’s season five heavyweight tournament will kick off at the Oct. 1 Bellator 52 event in Lake Charles, La.  The promotion today announced pairings for the tourney.  Ron Sparks will lock horns with Mark Holata, Neil Grove clashes with Mike Hayes, Thiago Santos battles Blagoi Ivanov and Abe Wagner faces Eric Prindle.

Matt Brown in for Pascal Krauss at UFC 138

With Pascal Krauss out due to an injury, Matt Brown has stepped up to fight John Hathaway at UFC 138.  Brown snapped a three-fight skid with a win over John Howard at UFC Live 4.  He’ll now face Hathaway in a fight that could possibly make its way onto the main card of the event, which takes place in Birmingham, England on Nov. 5.

“Binky” Jones to fight Lester Caslow at Bellator 49

Bellator today announced that James “Binky” Jones and Lester Caslow will square off in a catchweight bout on the preliminary card of Bellator 49.  The contracted weight for the fight was not revealed.  The Sept. 10 event takes place in Atlantic City, N.J., and the main card airs live on MTV2.

Junior Assuncao returns to the UFC as a featherweight, faces Eddie Yagin at UFC 135

After four years away from the Octagon, Junior Assuncao is coming back.  He’ll face former Tachi Palace Fights champion Eddie Yagin at UFC 135. Yagin, making his promotional debut, is coming off a win over former Bellator champion Joe Soto.  UFC 135 is scheduled for Sept. 24 in Denver.

UFC Fight Night 25 Injuries and Additions

The UFC today announced several changes to its Battle on the Bayou event, scheduled for Sept. 17 in New Orleans.

Mackens Semerzier and DaMarques Johnson have been scrapped from the event due to injury.  Semerzier is out of his scheduled fight with Mike Lullo.  The UFC has not yet announced a replacement opponent for Lullo.  Meanwhile, Johnson has withdrawn from his scheduled bout with Clay Harvison. TUF 11 alum Seth Baczynski will step in to replace Johnson.

The UFC also announced an addition to the card, as TUF 13’s Justin Edwards will welcome Jorge Lopez to the Octagon in welterweight action.

Chase Gormley scratched from XFC 14 co-headliner

While most of the “XFC 14: Resurrection” card is coming together, one fight has fallen apart.  UFC veteran Chase Gormley was pulled from a scheduled contest with fellow heavyweight Scott Barrett. Gormley competed in an Aug. 20 bout, suffering a TKO loss.  The loss resulted in XFC pulling Gormley from the Oct. 21 bout.  The promotion is seeking a replacement opponent for Barrett.  XFC 14 takes place in Orlando, Fla., and features former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner against Nate Jolly.  The show will air live on HDNet.

Ronda Rousey to fight Julia Budd at November Strikeforce event

Fresh off an August win in her Strikeforce debut, Olympic bronze medalist Ronda Rousey has agreed to a November bout with striker Julia Budd.  Budd most recently defeated fellow Muay Thai practitioner Germaine De Randamie via unanimous decision under the Strikeforce banner.

Zoila Gurgel to rematch Jessica Aguilar at Bellator event in October

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney today confirmed that Zoila Gurgel and Jessica Aguilar have verbally agreed to fight at a late October Bellator event.  The two ladies first met during the course of Bellator’s 115-pound women’s tournament, with Gurgel taking a split decision win on her way to winning the entire tournament and the 155-pound championship.  The rematch will be a non-title fight contested at a heavier weight of either 120 or 125 pounds.
