Akiyama drops to welterweight; takes on Shields at UFC 144

Japanese fighter Yoshihiro Akiyama will make his 170-pound debut in his native country on Feb. 26.  In his way will be former title challenger Jake Shields.  UFC President Dana White revealed the verbal agreements are in place for the fight.

UFC 144 takes place at Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo.

UFC 142 gets Bahadurzada-Silva, Maldonado-Nedkov

The UFC’s January return to Rio de Janeiro has added two fights, both featuring Brazilian fighters.

Recently signed Shooto champ Siyar Bahadurzada will make his Octagon debut against Erick Silva, who destroyed fellow Brazilian Luis Ramos in his own debut in August.

Also on tap for the card is a battle of light heavyweights.  Verbal agreements are in place for Fabio Maldonado to meet Stanislav Nedkov.

UFC 142 takes place Jan. 14 from HSBC Arena.

Soto-McDonald shifts to Spike Prelims

The upcoming UFC 139 undercard has been rearranged.

The debuting Alex Soto will take on fellow bantamweight Michael McDonald on the Spike TV portion of the card.   It will replace the Chris Weidman and Tom Lawlor bout, which will now air via Facebook.

UFC 139 takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. on Nov. 19.  The card is headlined by a light heavyweight showdown between Dan Henderson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.  The Soto-McDonald fight will join a light heavyweight match-up between Ryan Bader and Jason Brilz on Spike TV.

Management Appeals Semerzier vs. Peralta

The management team of featherweight Mackens Semerzier have filed an appeal with the California State Athletic Commission after an accidental headbutt ended Semerzier’s UFC on Fox 1 bout with Robert Peralta.

Brian Butler-Au, Semerzier’s manager, revealed that he has completed the paperwork for the appeal.

Semerzier was defeated by Peralta following the headbutt.  The fight aired on the Facebook portion of the UFC on Fox card.

K.J. Noons vs. Billy Evangelista set for ‘Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal’

Lightweights K.J. Noons and Billy Evangelista will battle on the main card of the Dec. 17 “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal” event.

The event takes place Dec. 17 at Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. The event’s main card airs on Showtime.

Bellator 58 Undercard Gets Araujo-Barbosa, Sharipov-Mello

Two undercard bouts have been added to the streamed portion of Bellator 58, which takes place Saturday from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla.

Farkhad Sharipov meets Fabio Mello at bantamweight, while Ailton Barbosa will face Valdir Araujo at welterweight. Both fights will be part of the Spike.com live undercard stream, which begins Saturday at 7 p.m. ET.

The MTV2 portion of the card is headlined by a lightweight title fight between champ Eddie Alvarez and fourth-season tournament winner Michael Chandler.
