Anthony Pettis meets Joe Lauzon at UFC 144

UFC president Dana White today announced that Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon will lock horns at UFC 144 in Saitama, Japan.  The fight is expected to be part of the main-card pay-per-view broadcast.  Lauzon is coming off a recent victory over Melvin Guillard, while Pettis rebounded from a loss to Clay Guida with a split decision win against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 136.

UFC 144 takes place Feb. 26 and features a lightweight championship bout between Frankie Edgar and top contender Ben Henderson.

Two fights set for UFC’s first-ever FX broadcast event

As part of its deal with Fox, the UFC will also hold live events to be broadcast on Fox’s cable network, FX.  The first show coming to FX will take place in January.  While it doesn’t have a venue or host city yet, it does already have two fights.  The UFC today announced that welterweights Josh Neer and Duane Ludwig have verbally agreed to a bout at the event.  The organization also announced verbal agreements for a heavyweight showdown between Christian Morecraft and Pat Barry.

Dustin Poirier gets requested match-up, meets Erik Koch on Super Bowl weekend

After his recent victory over Pablo Garza at UFC on Fox 1, Poirier requested a fight against the 13-1 Koch.  His wish was granted, as the two featherweights will meet in Las Vegas at UFC 143 on Feb. 4.  The UFC today announced that both fighters have verbally agreed to the match-up.

Palhares vs. Massenzio slated for UFC 142

Middleweights Rousimar Palhares and Mike Massenzio will clash on Palhares’ home turf in January.  UFC president Dana White today announced that verbal agreements are in place for a Jan. 14 meeting at UFC 142 between the two 185-pounders. Palhares will be making his second Octagon appearance in Brazil following a victory over Dan Miller at UFC 134.

Nam Phan battles Jim Hettes at UFC 141

In what was a busy day of fight announcements for the UFC, the organization revealed that Jim Hettes and Nam Phan have verbally agreed to square off at UFC 141.  The featherweight duel will likely take place on the preliminary portion of the card.

UFC 141 takes place Dec. 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and features a heavyweight clash between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem.

M-1 Global threatens legal action surrounding recent Bellator signing

One day after Bellator announced the signing of Vyacheslav Vasilevsky, M-1 Global has threatened legal action against the organization.  M-1 Global claims that the former M-1 light heavyweight champion is under exclusive contract with the Russian-based promotion until February 2013.  M-1 Global stated that it is in the process of issuing cease and desist orders to both the fighter and to Bellator.

MMA Junkie gets news-magazine show on Spike

Spike might be losing the UFC, but the network is by no means out of the MMA game.  After coming to an agreement with Bellator to televise fights, the cable network has now added a MMA news-magazine show to its plans.  The show, dubbed MMA Junkie Live, will begin in 2012 and will air live from MTV studios in Times Square.  The show will be half-hour in duration and hosts will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Jared Hess faces Brett Cooper at Bellator 58

Middleweights Jared Hess and Brett Cooper will battle at Bellator 58 this Saturday in Hollywood, Fla.  The two former Bellator tournament participants are among the running for a possible slot on Bellator’s televised card.  Fans are being asked to Tweet their preference to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney for which fight, between the Hess-Cooper bout and two other match-ups from the preliminary card, they’d most like to see on the MTV2 broadcast.

UFC on Fox 1 peaks with 8.8 million viewers

The first-ever UFC fight to air on Fox peaked with 8.8 million viewers on Saturday evening.  While the average audience stood at 5.7 million, it was confirmed today that during the heavyweight title clash between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos the number of viewers reached 8.8 million.

Ednaldo Oliveira to make Octagon debut at UFC 142

Undefeated heavyweight Ednaldo Oliveira has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC and will make his debut in his native Brazil.  A training partner of heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, Oliveira will compete against an as-yet undetermined opponent when the UFC returns to Rio de Janeiro for UFC 142 on Jan. 14.
