Strikeforce middleweight champion Rockhold to face Jardine

Strikeforce will be kicking of the 2012 with a bang as newly crowned middleweight champion Luke Rockhold will put his title on the line against MMA veteran Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine in the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, on Saturday, Jan. 7, at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Also, featured on the card are two rising stars versus two former champions. Former champ Robbie Lawler will face newcomer Adlan Amagov in a middleweight bout and  former champ “King” Mo Lawal takes on undefeated Lorenz Larkin in a light heavyweight bout.

Finally, Tarec Saffiedine and Tyler Stinson will square off in a welterweight bout.

UFC adds 125-pound flyweight division

Recently, the UFC-created The Ultimate Fighter reality series has enjoyed a successful run featuring fighters in lighter divisions. Thus, the UFC has opted to go even lighter and add the 125-pound flyweight division to the promotion.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the long-rumored division – which will be the UFC’s eighth – should be announced within the next few days.

“It’s happening,” he said. “I told you guys it’s happening, and it’s happening.”

Bellator signs controversial fighter War Machine

Bellator has resigned the polarizing fighter War Machine after a 2009 release stemming from politically disparaging comments. Recently, War Machine defeated MMA veteran Roger Huerta at a regional show in an effort to get his life and career back on track.

War Machine tweeted that he will participate in the season six welterweight tournament slated to start in March of 2012.

M-1 finds Sarnavskiy a replacement opponent in Cortez

Highly touted undefeated Russian prospect Alexander Sarnavskiy meets Sergio Cortez at M-1 Challenge 30 on Dec. 9, at The Hanger in Costa Mesa, Calif. Cortez replaces injured Francisco Drinaldo.

Sarnavskiy is undefeated through 16 fights, whereas Cortez has won three of his last four fights.

Strikeforce strikes deal with Showtime

UFC President Dana White confirmed that Strikeforce is here to stay with his announcement that Strikeforce has signed a deal with premium cable provider Showtime.

“That deal should be wrapped up any day now and then I’ll make the decisions on who goes where and what’s gonna happen,” White said during the press conference, alluding to a pending deal for Strikeforce to remain on Showtime. “We should know, hopefully, by Monday.”
