Ex-champ Alvarez snubs Bellator Fighting Championship, hopes for Aoki rematch

Bellator took a blow, as Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced that former champion Eddie Alvarez won’t be fighting for a chance to reclaim his Bellator lightweight title. Alvarez, arguably the organization’s best draw and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, will not take the remaining open spot in the season-six lightweight tournament.

Alvarez, who held the Bellator title for two-and-a-half years, is looking for a rematch with Dream champion Shinya Aoki.

Strikeforce champ Rockhold sidelined with broken right hand

Luke Rockhold emerged victorious and with his belt in tow against Keith Jardine in the recent his Strikeforce middleweight championship bout. Unfortunately, the champ suffered a broken bone in his right hand that will sideline him for four to seven weeks.

Rockhold suffered a clean break of his right hand during the Jan. 7 fight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Rockhold until July 6 due to the hand injury, though he can compete sooner if cleared by a physician.

Follow-up airing of ‘UFC Tonight’ draws 20,000 FUEL TV viewers

The second episode of the UFC’s new weekly news show, UFC Tonight, averaged 20,000 viewers on the FOX-owned Fuel TV.

The Jan. 3 series debut of the series scored 39,000 viewers. This may seem low. However, Fuel TV averaged just 15,000 viewers in 2011 altogether. With the UFC’s recent move from Spike TV to Fuel TV, the channel has been growing fast, as it went from being available in 25 million homes a few months ago to approximately 36 million homes.

UFC 141 live gate draws $3.1 million

The Nevada State Athletic Commission stated that UFC 141 sold 10,091 tickets for a live gate of $3,101,000.

According to the commission, a total of 13,793 were in attendance Dec. 30 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to watch Alistair Overeem defeat Brock Lesnar. A total of 3,702 tickets were comped and 137 were left unsold.

UFC 146 returns to the “Peach State”

The UFC will return to Georgia for the first time since 2008.

UFC 146 will take place April 21 in Atlanta. No fights were announced for the card, which is expected to take place at Phillips Arena. The last event held in Atlanta was UFC 88 on Sept. 6, 2008, also at Phillips Arena. That night was highlighted by Rashad Evans’ second-round knockout of Chuck Liddell.

Buddy Roberts vs. Sean Loeffler Added to UFC on Fuel 1

Middleweight newcomers Buddy Roberts and Sean Loeffler have been added to the UFC on Fuel 1 card, with verbal agreements in place for the Feb. 15 bout in Omaha, Neb.

Both Roberts and Loeffler are making their respective debuts at the UFC on Fuel 1 show.

UFC adds Pearson vs. Siver 2 and Corassani vs. Young to UFC on Fuel TV 2

Two more bouts have been added to the upcoming UFC on Fuel 2 fight card. One match-up will feature the homecoming of Sweden native Akira Corassani against British striker Jason Young.

Also added to the card is a rematch between former Ultimate Fighter winner Ross Pearson and newly minted featherweight Dennis Siver. The two fighters previously met in March of 2010 at lightweight, with Pearson winning by unanimous decision.

Falcao confirmed for Bellator season-six middleweight tournament

Maiquel Falcao was once considered a promising UFC talent. Now, years later, Falcao will make his stateside return this spring when he takes part in Bellator Fighting Championships’ sixth-season middleweight tournament.

Falcao has signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator and will compete in the eight-man tourney at 185 pounds. The tournament is expected to kick off March 2 and is scheduled to air on MTV2.
