UFC 142 Weigh-in Results: Johnson badly misses weight

The UFC today conducted weigh-ins for Saturday evening’s UFC 142 pay-per-view event, which will take at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  All fighters made weight except for Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who missed the mark by 12 pounds.

Johnson moved up to middleweight following troubles making the 170-pound welterweight limit.  Yet the weight troubles followed him as he prepared to make his middleweight debut at UFC 142. The fighter tipped the scales at 197 pounds for a scheduled 185-pound match-up against Vitor Belfort.  With his failure to make weight, Johnson will surrender 20% of his fight purse to Belfort.  Johnson must also remain under 205 pounds for tomorrow’s contest.

Johnson’s manager, Glenn Robinson of Authentic Sports Management, stated that medical reasons were responsible for the fighter’s failure to make weight.  According to Robinson, Johnson was down to 191.5 pounds Friday morning when he started feeling sick and unstable.  A local doctor examined Johnson and gave him fluids in order to improve his condition.  The fighter improved, but was no longer able to make weight.

The main event participants, featherweight champion Jose Aldo and challenger Chad Mendes, both made weight for their schedule championship affair.

Nate Marquardt parts ways with BAMMA

After having his promotional debut with BAMMA delayed twice, former UFC star Nate Marquardt requested, and was granted, his release from the British promotion.  Marquardt had been set to fight fellow UFC veteran Yoshiyuki Yoshida at BAMMA 9 for the organization’s welterweight title, but BAMMA delayed the event, pushing it back from Feb. 11 to March 24.  The change in dates prompted Marquardt’s request.

Pearson vs. Siver II won’t happen at UFC on Fuel TV 2 after all

Despite reports earlier this week that Ross Pearson and Dennis Siver would meet in a rematch of their 2010 UFC Fight Night 21 bout, a fight which Pearson won via unanimous decision and which earned both fighters a Fight of the Night bonus.  While reports suggested that the rematch was set for the April 14 Stockholm event, sources say the fighters were never even approached regarding the bout.
