Eight months ago, Nate Marquardt received his UFC walking papers, but he is now back in the Zuffa fold, as he signed a contract with Strikeforce. Marquardt’s signing was announced on Tuesday’s episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV.
UFC 146 will feature three new bouts as Gabriel Gonzaga will meet former Strikeforce heavyweight Shane Del Rosario, The Ultimate Fighter 14 winner Diego Brandao will face Darren Elkins and UFC newbie Glover Teixeira will take on Kyle Kingsbury.
The event is scheduled for May 26 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.
Lightweights T.J. Grant and Carlo Prater will battle at UFC on Fuel TV 3. Grant will make his second appearance at lightweight, whereas Prater will return to his natural weight class after competing at welterweight in his promotional debut. The two will do battle from the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., on May 15.
Nick Diaz’s fighter license was temporarily suspended on Wednesday during a meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, due to his recent positive drug test following UFC 143.
The suspension was unanimously approved by the commission until a follow-up disciplinary meeting can be scheduled. At that hearing, Diaz will have the opportunity to present a defense. A possible defense could be a medical marijuana exemption, as Diaz possesses a personal medical license issued in California.
Strikeforce could return to its origins in San Jose, Calif., as the promotion is targeting a May 19 event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. No match-ups have been confirmed, but it is expected the event will appear on Showtime.
Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo Souza will face International Fight League veteran Bristol Marunde at Strikeforce “Tate vs. Rousey” on March 3 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Souza was initially expected to face the talented Derek Brunson, but Brunson was pulled from the fight after failing a pre-fight eye exam.
Polish promotion Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW) has announced a major change to the upcoming KSW 18. Light heavyweight Jan Blachowicz will now face Mario Miranda because David Branch has been forced to withdraw due to passport issues.
French kickboxing veteran Jerome Le Banner has suffered a torn meniscus and has withdrawn from his bout with Polish talent Marc Rozalski. Rozalski will now face Strikeforce veteran Valentijn Overeem.
The Feb. 25 event takes place at Orlen Arena in Plock, Poland.
Duane “Bang” Ludwig is slated to meet Dan Hardy at UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Ludwig is coming of a submission loss to Josh Neer, whereas Hardy is coming off a submission loss to Chris Lytle.
