Dominick Cruz out of UFC 148 bout with Urijah Faber

Perhaps serving as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter is becoming slightly akin to appearing on the cover of a Madden NFL video game.  Both honors seem to come with a curse.  UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, slated to face Urijah Faber at UFC 148, is the latest fighter to sustain an injury leading up to a pay-per-view showdown between TUF coaches.

Cruz has torn his ACL and is unavailable to defend his belt against Faber. UFC President Dana White today confirmed Cruz’s injury.  Cruz was set to meet Faber in a title fight at UFC 148 on July 7 in Las Vegas.  It’s not yet clear if Faber will sit and wait for his shot at Cruz or take another fight in the interim.

Nate Marquardt expected to fight Tyron Woodley for vacant Strikeforce belt in July

The July Strikeforce event is starting to come together, as in addition to Jardine vs. Gracie, UFC veteran Nate Marquardt is expected to make his debut at the event.  Marquardt, who fought at middleweight while under the UFC banner, will battle Tyron Woodley for the vacant Strikeforce welterweight crown.  The title was vacated when Nick Diaz migrated to the UFC to challenge for the UFC’s 170-pound crown.

The event is likely to take place in either Portland, Ore., or Indianapolis.

Keith Jardine locks horns with Roger Gracie at Strikeforce event in July

After recently joining the middleweight ranks himself, UFC veteran Keith Jardine is now set to welcome another light heavyweight to the 185-pound division.  Jardine will take on Roger Gracie at a currently unannounced Strikeforce event expected for July.  The event is targeted for July 14 and will air live on Showtime and Showtime Extreme.

Gracie shifts to middleweight after suffering his first career loss via knockout versus Muhammed Lawal last September. Jardine suffered a TKO loss in his last outing, where he made his middleweight debut against Luke Rockhold.

Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix Finale card set with Mulhern vs. Villefort

Strikeforce finalized the lineup for its upcoming May 19 card with the addition of a welterweight contest between Quinn Mulhern and Yuri Villefort.  The welterweight scrap replaces a lightweight bout between James Terry and Billy Evangelista, which has been scratched from the card. Mulhern vs. Villefort will be part of the prelims broadcast, live on Showtime Extreme.

The main card will feature the heavyweight tournament final pitting Josh Barnett against Daniel Cormier.  Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will put his title on the line in a rematch with Josh Thomson.  Rounding out the main card bill, former light heavyweight champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante meets Mike Kyle and welterweight Naj-Shon Burrell battles Chris Spang.

In addition to Mulhern’s fight with Villefort, the preliminary card will see “JZ” Cavalcante take on Isaac Vallie-Flagg in lightweight action, and two light heavyweight clashes featuring Virgil Zwicker against Guto Inocente and Gian Villante against Derrick Mehmen.
