In less than two weeks, the biggest sporting event of the summer, according to Chael Sonnen, will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II.
In their first meeting, the world saw one of the most bizarre outcomes as middleweight champion Silva was beaten to a pulp for five consecutive rounds. It appeared as if Silva’s unbeaten streak in the UFC would finally come to an end. But, that wasn’t the case at all. At around the two-minute mark in the fifth and final round, Silva found himself on his back with signs of desperation coming from every angle of his body.
Then, out of nowhere, Silva connected on arguably the greatest comeback man has ever seen. A triangle armbar sealed the deal and allowed Silva’s UFC winning streak to extend to 12. From that very moment, Silva knew it was just a matter of time until he met Sonnen again.
And now, the time has come.
However, this time is different. Silva’s give-a-damn is busted after 23 consecutives months of verbal abuse from Sonnen. And, this time, Silva has made a few promises.
“People who live in the past, and things that are in the past, are in museums,” said Silva on the UFC 148 media call where The MMA Corner was present. “There’s no more talking, and I know he’s on the line listening. He will never want to fight in the UFC again.”
“There isn’t going to be a difference (this fight). He’s going to step out as the loser. The only difference is that he’s going to see a plastic surgeon after the fight,” said Silva.
Never before have we seen Silva speak so brutally towards an opponent. Even following his come-from-behind victory over Sonnen, we saw the champion drop to his knees in respect towards his defeated adversary.
Silva’s actions seemed to fit the part after he spent the majority of the night on his back and on the receiving end of Sonnen’s vicious ground-and-pound. However, this time around, Silva tells us it won’t matter what position he’s placed in.
“It doesn’t matter if I’m on the bottom, side or top. Chael is going to get his ass kicked like never before. I’m going to make sure that all his teeth are broken and all of his arms are broken,” Silva promised. “What I’m going to do inside of the Octagon will change the image of the sport.”
It appears as if Silva has had enough of Sonnen’s words. Many believe Silva’s harsh comments are a direct result of Sonnen’s use of performance-enhancing drugs leading up to their first meeting. While Sonnen served his time, Silva still isn’t satisfied.
“Chael is a criminal. He doesn’t deserve to be inside of the Octagon,” stated Silva. “I’m going to break his face and every one of his teeth.”
UFC 148 and Silva vs. Sonnen II will be aired on pay-per-view television on Saturday, July 7, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET.
