Over the weekend, it was announced that the winner of this Saturday’s UFC on Fox 4 main event fight between Brandon Vera and Mauricio Rua will get the next crack at the title. Rua, the former light heavyweight champion, lost his title back at UFC 128 to current champion Jon Jones, and lost to current No. 1 contender Dan Henderson at UFC 139. Vera also lost to Jones at a UFC Live card in 2010 and has never taken on Henderson. UFC on Fox 4 takes place this Saturday, Aug. 4, in Los Angeles. SOURCE: MMA Junkie Phillips out of title shot Despite the fact that John Phillips choked out Chris Fields in the main event of Cage Warriors 48 last week to earn a shot at the middleweight title, it will be Fields, not Phillips, who takes on Pavel Kusch for the title at CWFC Fight Night 7. The switch comes as a result of Phillips having a broken hand from his fight with Fields, and even though Fields lost the fight, the tournament final was scheduled to take place at Fight Night 7. The promotion felt like it’s hand was forced, but at the end of the day it felt like it made the best possible decision. CWFC Fight Night 7 is scheduled to take place on Sept. 1 in Jordan. SOURCE: The MMA Corner Alvarez vs. “Pitbull” set for October Lightweight Eddie Alvarez is up for free agency, but not until he closes out his contractual obligations to Bellator Fighting Championships. Alvarez has one fight remaining on his deal with the promotion until he officially is free to sign with another promotion, and it was recently revealed that the former champion would take on Patricky Freire in the last fight on his contract. The fight is scheduled to take place on Oct. 12.
