Each day, The MMA Corner will provide a recap of results, event announcements, fight matchups, and injuries/cancellations from throughout the world of MMA.
Former UFC veteran and Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, Renato “Babalu” Sobral will get another chance at a major promotion’s belt this time for Bellator.
The 37-year-old fighter has signed on with Bellator and will make his debut for the promotion in 2013 for their next light heavyweight tournament.
“I’m really happy to be a part of the Bellator family,” Sobral said in the official release. “This is my new home, and I can’t wait to get into the tournament…I’m going to take this opportunity and get my shot at the Bellator world title.”
Sobral most recently defeated Tatsuya Mizuno at One FC 4 in just 31 seconds on June 23.
B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald seem to finally have an event to house their welterweight clash.
The two fighters seem to be headed for UFC on FOX 5 in December of this year. The two welterweights were originally suppose to fight at UFC 152, but due to an injury to MacDonald the fight had to be scrapped for a later date.
This fight will be the return to the cage after Penn’s short-lived hiatus from mixed martial arts. The two fighters went back and forth on when and where the fight should take place but now seems to have a resolution with the date and venue to be determined later this year.
The Minneapolis crowd will get treated to a great fight now that Yves Edwards and Jeremy Stephens are set to square off at UFC on FX 5 on Oct. 5.
Edwards is coming off of a loss to Tony Ferguson at “The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale” from last December. Edwards is currently 3-2 in his third stint with the UFC.
Stephens on the other hand is riding a two-fight losing streak and could possibly lose his job with the UFC with a loss to Edwards. Stephens has lost back-to-back fights to WEC veterans Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis, respectively.
