In a shocking turn of events, the Sept. 1 UFC 151 fight card has been cancelled just nine days before it was slated to happen.

UFC President Dana White announced the information on a media conference call on Thursday in which The MMA Corner was present. White called it “the lowest moment in UFC history.”

Title challenger Dan Henderson suffered a partial tear in his MCL and was forced to pull out of his fight with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at the Las Vegas event.

White revealed that the headlining slot was then offered to former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen, but Jones declined the fight. The UFC President was clearly upset by Jones’ decision, citing that it had never happened with any champion. White pointed the finger toward Jones’ coach Greg Jackson, calling him a “sport killer.”

“As a fight promoter, you can’t make someone fight,” said White. “You’re either a fighter or you’re not. Good for you Jon Jones, you have the money to not take this fight. But there are guys on the undercard who need to fight to feed their families.”

As a result of the news, Jones will now rematch former champion Lyoto Machida on Sept. 22 at UFC 152 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

White could not specify how much financial damage the cancellation would cause the promotion, but stated that they had spent a “sh*tload” of money to promote the card. White acknowledged that he didn’t think the Sonnen fight made sense, but that they were simply out of options.

Additionally, White was uncertain about what would happen to the other 10 fights on the card, which included welterweights Jake Ellenberger and Jay Hieron, featherweights Dennis Siver and Eddie Yagin, lightweights Dennis Hallman and Thiago Tavares and flyweights John Lineker and Yasuhiro Urushitani.

Due to the cancellation, fans can contact Ticketmaster for a full refund.
