Matt Hughes officially retires, hired by UFC

Former two-time UFC welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes officially hung up the gloves today.  In his professional career, Hughes amassed a record of 45-9, defended the welterweight championship seven times, and was the first fight to defeat reigning champ Georges St-Pierre.  Additionally, despite not winning a fight since 2010, Hughes still holds the record for most victories inside the Octagon with 18.

Even though he has retired, he will stay close to the sport and the promotion as he has accepted a position in the UFC’s front office as the Vice President of Athlete Development and Government Relations.

Maximum Fighting Championship signs Brazilian Novaes

Maximum Fighting Championship enhanced their roster today with the announced signing of Brazilian lightweight Jonatas Novaes.  With the signing, “Peixe Frito” already finds himself with an opponent as he will take on Kurt Southern at MFC 36: Reality Check.

Novaes will replace David Castillo, who was taken off of the card due to a serious neck injury that was found during a medical examination.

The Brazilian has a career record of 10-4, with seven of the victories by way of submission.

MFC 36: Reality Check takes place on on Friday, Feb. 15 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Cage Warriors 52 adds a welterweight fight

Cage Warriors has added a welterweight clash to their upcoming fight card on March 9.  Undefeated Mohsen Bahari will take on Bruno Carvalho at Cage Warriors 52.

Bahari will make his second appearance with the promotion, having disposed of Piotr Ptasinski in his last fight by unanimous decision.  This also is not the first promotional fight for Carvalho, having lost to Cathal Pendred by unanimous decision.

Cage Warriors 52 takes place on Saturday, March 9 in London.

Cage Warriors planning European tour

Cage Warriors primarily holds their fight cards in England, but is looking to expand upon that in 2013.

While no fights have been announced, the promotion will be in Glasgow, Scotland for Cage Warriors 53 on April 13, in Cardiff, Wales for Cage Warriors 54 on May 4, and in Dublin, Ireland for Cage Warriors 55 on June 1.
