On Thursday, Feb. 21, Bellator made its first appearance in the state of Utah, landing at the Maverik Center in West Valley City. The event, the promotion’s 90th, featured a featherweight tournament final between Shahbulat Shamhalaev and Rad Martinez, as well as the semifinals of the Season 8 light heavyweight tournament.

Shamhalaev and Martinez were expected to compete at the end of Season 7, but the Russian Shamhalaev fell ill and the fight was postponed until the promotion made its debut on Spike TV.

The light heavyweight tournament continued with the four remaining fighters looking for a $100,000 prize and a shot at the 205-pound championship currently held by Christian M’Pumbu. In one of the biggest upsets in recent Bellator history, Emanuel Newton shocked Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal with a first-round, spinning hammerfist knockout.

Main card action was shown on Spike beginning at 10 p.m. ET, with the night’s undercard streaming live on Spike.com starting at 8 p.m. ET.
