Hendricks heads UFC 167 medical suspensions

Johny Hendricks’ streak of tough luck continues. After losing a controversial split-decision in a UFC welterweight title bid against champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 167, and then getting edged out in the EA UFC cover voting polls, Hendricks could face up to six months unless his right knee gets cleared by a doctor. In contrast, St-Pierre will only sit out until New Years Day with no contact until Dec. 17.

The suspensions read as follows:

  • Georges St-Pierre: suspended until 1/1/14 with no contact until 12/17/13
  • Johny Hendricks: suspended until 5/17/14 unless cleared by orthopedist for right knee, and suspended until 12/17/13 with no contact until 12/8/13

  • Josh Koscheck: suspended until 1/1/14 with no contact until 12/17/13
  • Ali Bagautinov: suspended until 5/17/14 unless cleared by orthopedist for left foot, and suspended until 12/17/13 with no contact until 12/8/13
  • Evan Dunham: suspended until 1/1/14 with no contact until 12/17/13 for left eyebrow laceration
  • Rick Story: suspended until 1/1/14 with no contact until 12/17/13 for left eyebrow laceration
  • Erik Perez: suspended until 12/17/13 with no contact until 12/8/13 for laceration on bridge of nose

Cage Warriors targets Scandinavia

Count the Cage Warrior promotion in, as far as aspirations to break ground in Scandinavia go. The promotion will start off in Denmark for an event slated for sometime within the first quarter of 2014, and then they will aim to follow it up with an event in Sweden. While the Norwegian sports scene currently recognizes a prohibition on featuring mixed martial arts showcases, Cage Warriors will work to ensure that they can put on an exciting night of action in that part of Europe as part of their Scandinavian takeover.

Cruz-Barao, Aldo-Lamas official for UFC 169

Super Bowl weekend will officially get the two fights MMA fans have wanted for a long time. UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, who has not defended his title since an Oct. 2011 win over now-flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, faces UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao, who ended his 2013 on wins over Michael McDonald and Eddie Wineland. Meanwhile, Aldo comes off of a UFC 163 win over Chan Sung Jung, while Lamas last fought in a UFC on Fox 6 win over Erik Koch.

Legend FC ceases operations

After years of producing some of Asia’s top MMA talents, Legend FC will call it a run as a promotion. The promotion only held one event in the past 15 months and struggled to develop a fan base recently. Speculation points to the promotion looking to sell a number of prospects and their contracts to other promotions, but it remains in question about whether or not ONE FC, the UFC, or any other major promotion will express interest in any Legend FC talent.

UFN 32 drug tests come back clean

All UFC Fight Night 32 drug tests came back clean. Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort underwent testing, along with four other undisclosed names from the card. Important of note, both Belfort and Henderson received therapeutic-use exemptions for Testosterone Replacement Therapy prior to the fight, but needed to stay within sanctioned limits, which both did.
