UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis Opts for Surgery

As expected, recently-crowned UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis will need surgery to repair a torn PCL in his knee. The Roufusport fighter is slated to go under the knife on Dec. 12 and is expected to be out until summer of 2014.

Welterweight Brian Melancon Hangs Up the Gloves

Citing health issues related to his kidneys, 31-year-old welterweight Brian Melancon has decided to retire from the sport of MMA.

The Strikeforce veteran scored an impressive knockout win over Seth Baczynski in his UFC debut in July, but was submitted in his second appearance in the Octagon in August. The Texas fighter was expected to face Ultimate Fighter winner Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 33 on Dec. 6, but that fight has now been scrapped.

Melancon will return to career as a physical therapist and leaves the sport with a record of 7-3.

UFC Signs Sampo, Benoit for TUF 18 Finale

Flyweights Josh Sampo and Ryan Benoit have been signed to face one another at The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale on Nov. 30 in Las Vegas.

Both fighters are veterans of the Texas-based Legacy Fighting Championship. Sampo also holds the Championship Fighting Alliance flyweight title, which he captured via a fifth-round submission of Bellator veteran Alexis Vila. Benoit competed for the Maximum Fighting Championship bantamweight title, but fell short against Anthony Birchak.

The event takes place from the Mandalay Bay Events Center and airs live on Fox Sports 1.

Horiguchi Drops to Flyweight, Faces Cariaso at UFC 169

Japanese fighter and recent UFC winner Kyoji Horiguchi will drop down to flyweight for his second Octagon appearance to take on top-10 fighter Chris Cariaso at UFC 169 in New Jersey on Feb. 2.

UFC 169 takes place from the Prudential Center in Newark and is headlined by a pair of title fights. Featherweight champion Jose Aldo battles Ricardo Lamas in the co-main event, while the main event features a bantamweight title unification bout between champion Dominick Cruz and interim champion Renan Barao.

Mizuki Inoue vs Emi Tomimatsu Title Bout Targeted For Feb. 16

Deep Jewels is expected to crown its inaugural, 114-pound lightweight champion at Deep Jewels 3 on Feb. 16. Tournament finalists Mizuki Inoue and Emi Tomimatsu will square off in the night’s main event.

More bouts for the event are expected to be announced in the coming months. Deep Jewels 3 will take place from Shinjuku FACE in Tokyo, Japan.

Max Nunes Replaces Injured Scott Askham At BAMMA 14

BAMMA middleweight champion Scott Askham has been forced out of his BAMMA 14 title defense against Ion Pascu due to injury.

In Askham’s place will be hard-hitting Swedish fighter Max Nunes, although the bout will now be a non-title affair.

BAMMA 14 takes place Dec. 14 from the LG Arena in Birmingham, England. The main card airs live on AXS TV and is headlined by a welterweight contest between Paul Daley and Romario Manoel da Silva.

No Surgery for Gastelum

Ultimate Fighter winner Kelvin Gastelum will not need surgery for his torn PCL. The fighter will be forced to wear a brace for six weeks.

The welterweight was expected to face Court McGee at UFC on Fox 9 on Dec. 14, but injured the knee during training and was forced to pull out of the contest.
