Canada’s Maximum Fighting Championship has a new addition to its welterweight roster.

The MMA Corner has learned that the promotion has inked Ultimate Fighter alum and UFC veteran Gilbert “Jamal” Smith to a three-fight contract.

Smith, who hails from Colorado, carries a record of seven wins against just two losses. Five of his seven wins have come via submission.

The Team Victory/Factory X-trained fighter earned his way into the TUF house on the reality show’s 17th season with an arm-triangle choke of Eric Wahlin, but suffered a knockout loss to Luke Barnatt during the show’s elimination round. Smith was brought back for the show’s Finale in April, but succumbed to a third-round submission against Robert “Bubba” McDaniel.

Since the loss, Smith has scored back-to-back wins over Jason Lee and Donnie Liles. The third-round submission victory over Lee came under the Denver-based Fight to Win promotion at Prize Fighting Championship 2 in July, while the unanimous decision win over Liles took place under the Sparta Combat League banner in September and marked his 170-pound debut.

Smith’s debut with MFC will take place on Jan. 17, live on AXS TV. The fighter is anxious to step into the ring and put himself into title contention. “I’m now with MFC and I am gunning straight for that belt!” he told The MMA Corner. Across the ring from Smith will be another former middleweight, former title challenger Jason South. With a win over South, don’t be surprised if Smith is challenging for gold in The Great White North sometime in 2014.
