TUF 18 Finale medical suspensions

Julianna Pena, Akira Corassani, Ryan Benoit, and Drew Dober headed the list of medical suspensions from The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Pena, who won the season via a first-round finish of Jessica Rakoczy, must have her right thumb x-rayed and cleared before she can compete again. Corassani, who had his nose broken in five different place after an illegal knee from Maximo Blanco, could find himself out of action until late May of 2014. Also, Ryan Benoit and Drew Dober could find themselves out of action until May as well. Benoit will need his left hand x-rayed and cleared and Dober needs clearance for right orbital fractures.

The full list of medical suspensions from the TUF 18 Finale reads as follows:

  • Gray Maynard: Suspended until 1/30/14 with no contact until 1/15/14 for left forehead laceration and TKO loss
  • Julianna Pena: Must have right thumb x-rayed and cleared by doctor before return
  • Jessica Rakoczy: Suspended until 1/15/14
  • Davey Grant: Suspended until 1/15/14 with no contact until 12/31/13
  • Peggy Morgan: Suspended until 1/15/14 with no contact until 12/31/13
  • Akira Corassani: Must have broken nose cleared by ENT or no contest until 5/30/14. Otherwise, suspended until 1/30/14 with no contact until 1/15/14.
  • Drew Dober: Must have right orbital fractures cleared by ENT or no contest until 5/30/14. Otherwise, suspended until 1/30/14 with no contact until 1/15/14.
  • Ryan Benoit: Must have left hand x-rayed and cleared by doctor or no contest until 5/30/14. Otherwise, suspended until 12/31/13 with no contact until 12/22/13.

Cavalcante-Gaethje 2 headlines WSOF 8

Undefeated Justin Gaethje will get his opportunity to claim the inaugural WSOF lightweight title at WSOF 8 on Jan. 18 against Gesias Cavalcante. The two first fought at WSOF 2, where Gaethje took a first-round victory due to a cut. Since that loss, “JZ” has beaten Tyson Griffin, while Gaethje went on to beat Brian Cobb and Dan Lauzon.

Kedzie-Correia moves to UFN 33

With Mitch Gagnon experiencing visa issues that will prevent him from facing Alex Caceres at UFC Fight Night 33, Julie Kedzie’s bout with Bethe Correia will move up to the main card of this Friday’s event lineup. The bout, originally scheduled to cap off the Fox Sports 2 portion of the card, marks Correia’s promotional debut and Kedzie’s second bout with the UFC. With the women’s bantamweight bout moving up, a middleweight bout of Bruno Santos and Krzysztof Jotko will move to the opening portion of the Fox Sports 2 portion of the event.

Dean to referee Weidman-Silva 2 at UFC 168

As Chris Weidman looks to make the first defense of his UFC middleweight title against former champion Anderson Silva at UFC 168, fans can already expect to see one of the best in the business as the third man in the cage. Veteran referee Herb Dean will take the assignment as the referee for the highly-anticipated rematch. This comes as little surprise, as Dean officiated the first meeting between the two at UFC 162.

CWFC December fight card updates

Cage Warriors Fighting Championship’s December schedule will undergo a number of changes. At Cage Warriors 62, which will go down this Saturday, Jordan Desborough will combat Martin Sheridan at a 139-pound catchweight, while Dan Hope substitutes  for Alan Johnston to meet Tommy Quinn at a 175-pound catchweight. Also, James Brum will get stiff competition in the form of Marat Pekov at Cage Warriors 61 next weekend.
