Twelve seconds.

That’s all it took for 21-year-old strawweight Rose Namajunas to submit Kathina Catron with a flying armbar and electrify the crowd at Invicta Fighting Championships 5 in April.

Namajunas opened with a left hook, quickly clinched with Catron, and before most of the crowd in attendance had time to blink, was celebrating her stunning submission victory.

In the process, Namajunas not only wrapped our 2013 Submission of the Year award, she put herself on the map as a legitimate title threat at 115 pounds.

Although Namajunas would drop a hard-fought decision to Tecia Torres at Invicta’s next event in July, the Grudge Training Center product did enough to garner the attention of the UFC. In December, it was announced that Namajunas would join 10 other strawweights under contract with Invicta in the UFC as part of The Ultimate Fighter 20.

Below is video of Namajunas’ submission win (skip ahead to the 1:05 mark for the beginning of the fight).

Honorable Mention: Anthony Pettis’ armbar of Benson Henderson (UFC 164), Josh Burkman’s guillotine choke of Jon Fitch (WSOF 3)
