On Friday, Jan. 17, Maximum Fighting Championship hosted its 39th event dubbed “No Remorse.” The event emanated from the Northlands Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and aired live on AXS TV.

For its first event of 2014, the Canadian promotion returned with an action-packed card that had two titles for the taking.

The night’s main event featured recently-crowed heavyweight champion Anthony Hamilton defending his belt for the first time against Ultimate Fighter alum Darrill Schoonover. Hamilton extended his winning streak to five in October with a vicious head kick knockout of Smealinho Rama at MFC 38. Schoonover stepped into the ring on a three-fight winning streak of his own, but had not competed since 2012.

Also on the card, the promotion’s vacant lightweight title was up for grabs—for one fighter that is. Since the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission allows for just one weigh-in attempt and Tom Gallicchio missed weight by 0.2 pounds, the 155-pound title was only able to be claimed by Kurt Southern. The fight remained a five-round affair despite Gallicchio’s failure to make weight.

The rest of the televised card featured another TUF alum in Gilbert “Jamal” Smith who faced off with Jason South at welterweight, while Colorado’s Marcus Edwards stepped up on less than a week’s notice for a catchweight affair against Sean Powers. All of the main card action aired live on AXS TV beginning at 10 p.m. ET.
