Dean to officiate Rousey-McMann at UFC 170

Despite a controversial TKO stoppage in the Renan Barao-Urijah Faber headliner of last week’s UFC 169 card, veteran ref Herb Dean will officiate the battle of unbeaten women’s bantamweights as UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey faces fellow Olympian Sara McMann. Rousey will enter 2014 on the heels of a third-round armbar win over Miesha Tate at UFC 168, while McMann last fought at UFC 159 last April. McMann withdrew from a planned  UFC Fight Night 27 bout with Sarah Kaufman for personal reasons, but will return to action on Feb. 22.

Bellator 113 finalized with season-ten lightweight tourney

Bellator 113 planned on featuring a light-heavyweight world title unification bout with reigning Bellator light-heavyweight world champion Attila Vegh re-matching now-interim light-heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton in a rematch of their 2012 Summer Series tournament semifinal bout, in which Vegh edged out Newton via a split-decision verdict that did not come without some controversy behind the decision.

Now, the bout remains official and set in stone as the night’s headliner, on top of another action-packed card that will air on Spike TV. Also, the Bellator lightweight tournament quarterfinal brackets for season 10’s “best of eight” tourney will take place. Former Bellator lightweight tournament veteran Marcin Held combats Rodrigo Cavalheiro, UFC veteran Terry Etim faces undefeated Derek Anderson, and a clash between David Rickels and Patricky Freire co-headlines the card. Brandon Girtz and Derek Campos will do battle as part of the tourney as well, albeit on the preliminary portion of the card.

UFC 170 card gets Chavez-Cedeno

Despite losing a bout between Rustam Khabilov and Rafael dos Anjos, UFC 170 will reshuffle and move forward. A welterweight bout with TJ Waldburger against Mike Pyle will see main-card status, while debuting lightweights Ernest Chavez and Yosdenis Cedeno compete on the preliminary portion. This reshaping of the card follows news of dos Anjos accepting a UFC on Fox 11 bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov, which in itself came after the news of Khabilov’s withdrawal. News of a new opponent for Raphael Assuncao remains in question, but may receive confirmation as the event draws closer
