Melendez to Bellator, pending UFC’s right to match

Bellator MMA and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez have come to terms on a deal that would allow Melendez to compete on a multi-fight contract under the promotion, which features Eddie Alvarez as its reigning lightweight world champion. The UFC does, however, reserve the right to match the offer that Bellator MMA laid out on the table for Melendez, if they so choose. If not, fans can expect Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney to announce exactly when and where Melendez’s debut for the promotion will come.

Cage Warriors 64 weigh-in results

Though welterweight Danny Roberts and featherweight Nad Narimani made weight on their second trips to the scales, a number of fighters missed their mark at the weigh-ins for Cage Warriors 64 tomorrow inside The Forum in London, England. Cameron Else hit the scales at 131.9 pounds for his 130-lb. catchweight bout with Spencer Hewitt, while bantamweight Huseyin Garabet came in at 137 pounds for his bout with Daniel Crawford. Female strawweight Kirsty Davis came in at 121.1 for her pro debut against Veera Nykanen, who actually came in at 113.7 pounds, which falls under the amateur non-title weight limit of 116 pounds for strawweights.  Also, lightweight Daniel Howell missed the mark for his bout with Brad Wheeler.

Else and Garabet will surrender a quarter of their respective purses to their opponents, regardless of the outcome of their bouts tomorrow. Cage Warriors officials also confirmed that 40 percent of Davis’ purse, as well as Howell’s purse, will go to Nykanen and Wheeler respectively.

Evans likely to need surgery,

Despite an initial belief to the contrary, it seem “Suga” Rashad Evans will need surgery on his knee after all. After suffering a knee injury which occurred sometime after executing a throw in training, Evans found himself forced from a UFC 170 date with Daniel Cormier, but original expectations were for Evans to return in four weeks. With the surgery, however, Evans could find himself out of action for longer. UFC president Dana White confirmed the unfortunate circumstances, but could not give a definitive timetable for the return of the former UFC light-heavyweight champion.
