After announcing recent signee Jake Shields would be competing on the WSOF 11 card earlier today, World Series of Fighting has wasted little time in adding another high-profile acquisition to their summer event.

Melvin Guillard will enter the WSOF cage for the first time this July, looking to shake off his recent release from the UFC and get into title contention in his new promotion when he takes on Gesias ‘JZ’ Cavalcante on July 5.

Guillard, a competitor on The Ultimate Fighter season two back in 2005, has spent the majority of the last nine years fighting inside the Octagon. With double-digit victories while fighting in the UFC and a penchant for violence, Guillard had been a staple of the promotion’s lightweight division since it returned in 2006. However, an uneventful loss to rising lightweight Michael Johnson in March drew the ire of UFC president Dana White, and with just a 1-3-1 record in his last five bouts, the promotion decided to cut ties with Guillard. He was scooped up by WSOF shortly after.

Cavalcante is a former Strikeforce and Dream competitor that is looking to get into a groove and win back-to-back fights for the first time since 2008 when he takes on Guillard. JZ is coming off of a very impressive stoppage win over former UFC contender Tyson Griffin at WSOF 4 last August, but Cavalcante’s inconsistency has been killing his chances at earning a title shot over the past few years. Two straight wins over well-known UFC veterans would be a solid place to start working back into the title scene.

WSOF 11 will take place on July 5 from a yet-to-be-named location. The main event features a lightweight title fight between champion Justin Gaethje and Nick Newell, and a co-main event between welterweights Jon Fitch and Jake Shields.
