One house, 16 fighters. It might not seem all that daunting, but each season, The Ultimate Fighter’s format takes a toll, both mentally and physically, on the fighters seeking to snag that six-figure contract. While The Ultimate Fighter 19 continues in search of the next great welterweight, the third installment of the Brazilian version of the UFC’s landmark reality series continues to keep on rolling.

This week, on the ninth episode of the show, coach Chael Sonnen finally had control of the competition over rival Wanderlei Silva. The last two quarterfinals were already set, as middleweights Warlley Alves and Ismael de Jesus had yet to battle, the same is true for  heavyweights Jollyson Francisco and Marcos Rogério.  The quarterfinal round started with the heavyweights and aimed to finish with the heavyweights, meaning that Alves and de Jesus would battle this week. Sonnen, who selected Alves as the third middleweight pick for his team, felt so confident in what Alves could do that he outright said that if de Jesus were to defeat Alves, he’d call UFC president Dana White to ask him to sign Alves to a UFC contract.

After a look at both fighters, Silva and Sonnen took part in the coaches’ challenge. For this challenge, the coaches needed to navigate through a few agility and handling drills, and then they try to score a goal. Add in the fact that this year’s World Cup emanates from Brazil, and this seemed like Wanderlei’s challenge to win, right? Both men started off close, but Silva struggled with the ball-handling drill, and from there, it was Sonnen who took the lead and never looked back. 75,000 Reals ($33,000 USD) went to Sonnen and his boys, but Silva still promised to prevail in the fight.

The housemates partook in a luau-themed party. Food, music, the Brazilian Octagon girls, and tiki drinks were supplied, and as one could expect, the drinks led to an adult game of “Truth or Dare”, where some of the housemates dared a few of their fellow housemates to kiss one of the Octagon girls smack-dab on the lips.

Afterwards, we got a look at Team Sonnen coming to the house to check on Alves’ weight before weigh-ins. Both men hit their mark and prepared for combat.

Heavyweight Fight: Ismael de Jesus (Team Wanderlei) vs. Warlley Alves (Team Sonnen)

Alves opened the round looking to slow de Jesus down early with hard kicks. “Marmota” used a flurry to close the distance, leading to a grappling battle against the cage. That proved to be his undoing, however, as Alves secured a full clinch and rocked de Jesus with a mean knee to the head. Two more did enough to shut de Jesus down, and with the win, Alves moved through to the semifinals.

Warlley Alves def. Ismael de Jesus by knockout (punches and knee). Round 1, 3:38

Francisco vs. Rogerio remains the lone bout left in the quarterfinals. What will happen next week? Will the tide turn back in Silva’s favor? Or will Sonnen keep control as we prepare to enter the semifinals? Find out next Sunday as The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 continues!
