Earlier today, Bellator MMA issued a press release that stated they had granted lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez his unconditional release from the promotion. On the heel of this news, the much rumored match between Alvarez and lightweight standout Donald Cerrone has been officially announced as the co-main event of UFC 178.

Alvarez debut with Bellator MMA after his incredible run in DREAM, which included incredible bouts against Joachim Hansen and Tatsuya Kawajiri. Alvarez is currently riding a three fight win streak and has also won 10 of his 11 bouts. The only person to defeat him during that stretch was the then undefeated Michael Chandler via rear naked choke at Bellator 58. He avenged that loss at Bellator 106, which also happened to be his last fight with the promotion.

Donald Cerrone has also been on a terror as of late. The #4 ranked lightweight is 5-1 in his last six bouts, which includes wins over Jim Miller, Edson Barboza, and Evan Dunham.

Eddie Alvarez, long believed to be the best lightweight not on the UFC roster, will now have his chance to prove all of his supporters that his Octagon debut has been long overdue. However, the UFC is not pitching Alvarez a softball by any means in his debut. Cerrone has proved that he is a very dangerous all-around fighter; he can knock you out on the feet and submit you with ease on the ground. With Alvarez’s straight forward fighting style, this fight will most certainly be a barn-burner that cannot be missed.

UFC 178 takes place on September 27 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The event is headlined by a flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson and Chris Cariaso.
