On Monday, September 1, Countdown to UFC Fight Night: Jacare vs. Mousasi will debut on FOX Sports 1.  This series, leading up to the event on September 5, will give viewers an inside look at what some of the main-card fighters go through leading into their respective bouts.

The main event will feature a clash between two middleweight contenders when Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (no.4 middleweight) takes on Gegard Mousasi (no. 7 middleweight) in a rematch of their fight at DREAM 6 in 2008. Their bout at DREAM ended very quickly and in an odd way. After securing a takedown, Souza attempted to jump into Mousasi’s guard while throwing a punch. However, a well timed upkick knocked Souza out cold, and Mousasi was awarded the DREAM middleweight title.

Souza (20-3, 1NC) went on to win the Strikeforce middleweight title and has gone a perfect 3-0 inside the UFC Octagon. Mousasi (35-4-2) has gone a respectable 2-1 inside the Octagon, but most remember him for his lackluster performance against Lyoto Machida where Mousasi lost by unanimous decision.

The co-main event features a heavyweight bout between Alistar Overeem (no. 7 heavyweight) vs. Ben Rothwell. Overeem (37-13, 1NC) began his UFC career with a bang when he knocked out former UFC champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 141, but has since been knocked out by Antonio Silva and Travis Browne. Overeem redeemed himself at UFC 169 when he out-struck former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir 62 to 3 en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Rothwell has gone 3-3 in his six fights inside the Octagon. His three victories have come over Brandon Vera, Brendan Schaub, and Gilbert Yvel, while he has lost to Gabriel Gonzaga, Mark Hunt, and current heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez. In an interesting side note, Rothwell has yet to be able to secure back-to-back victories inside the Octagon.

The rest of the main card breaks down as follows:

Heavyweight—Matt Mitrione vs. Derrick Lewis

Lightweight—Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Chiesa

Featherweight—Nik Lentz (no. 4 featherweight) vs. Charles Oliveira (no. 14 featherweight)

Flyweight—John Moraga (no. 5 flyweight) vs. Justin Scoggins

The main card action will begin at 9:00 pm EST and the undercard bouts will kick off at 7:00 pm EST. All fights for this event will air on FOX Sports 1.
