Ben Rothwell (Esther Lin/MMA Fighting)UFC Fight Night 50 Full Fight Video Highlights: Rothwell Ko’s Overeem and Then Dances Josh Davis September 5, 2014 Events, News, Recaps, Spotlight, Video On Friday, September 5th the UFC will hold UFC Fight Night 50: Jacare vs. Mousasi from the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut. This marks the UFC’s first trip to the New England state and interestingly the event is being held on the same night and only miles apart from Bellator’s event at the Mohegan Sun Casino. The UFC is offering up a stellar night of fights. In the night’s headliner we might see a new number one contender emerge in the middleweight division when Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza faces Gegard Mousasi. This fight is a rematch from nearly six years ago when Mousasi knocked out Souza with an upkick. This time around Souza is the favorite. The UFC’s number four ranked middleweight contender has been on an absolute tear recently. Souza has won six straight fights with five of them coming inside the distance. Most recently, he handed Francis Carmont his first UFC loss with a dominant performance back in February. Mousasi has lost only to Lyoto Machida in his last eight bouts and is coming off of a destruction of Mark Munoz in Germany. Mousasi is at number eight in the UFC rankings, but a win over ‘Jacare’ could vault him into the top five. In the night’s co-main event fans will be treated to a slugfest when heavy-hitting heavyweights, Ben Rothwell and Alistair Overeem, face off. Overeem is looking to finally make the run towards the UFC heavyweight title that most expected to when he moved over to the promotion from Strikeforce. Overeem probably saved his spot in the promotion when he dominated Frank Mir to halt a two fight skid. Standing in Overeem’s way is Rothwell. The former IFL standout has also had his ups and downs in the UFC. The Wisconsin native has alternated wins and losses every time out since moving under the Zuffa banner. This time Rothwell is coming off of a victory. He went into full berserker mode when he finished Brandon Vera last August. It remains to be seen how the layoff will effect Rothwell though. The other four fights on the main card are also good enough to be featured on any pay-per-view. Rising heavyweight Derrick Lewis will test his skills against Matt Mitrione in the third fight from the top. Lightweight fan favorites, Michael Chiesa and Joe Lauzon, will throw down to move up the crowded rankings. Preceding that fight will be an interesting flyweight tilt between Justin Scoggins and John Moraga. The six fight main card airs on Fox Sports 1 at 9 pm ET after a four fight preliminary card airs on the same network at 7 pm ET.
