(Esther Lin/Invicta FC)Invicta FC 10: What to Watch For RJ Gardner December 2, 2014 Events, Spotlight On Friday, December 5, 2014, Invicta heads to the Arena Theater in Houston, TX for Invicta FC 10: Waterson vs. Tiburcio. Originally this event was going to feature Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino making her bantamweight debut, but on November 1, during Invicta FC 9, it was announced that she had suffered an injury and would be unable to compete. Instead of Cyborg’s bantamweight debut, fans will be treated to an atomweight title fight between champion Michelle Waterson and challenger Herica Tiburcio. There’s more to this event than just a title fight as Invicta has once again put together a stellar fight card that will please the fans. DeAnna Bennett vs. Jennifer Maia Invicta FC’s flyweight division is loaded with some of the best talent in the world and both Bennett and Maia are hungry to climb into title contention. Maia was one win away from a title shot last year before losing to Leslie Smith at Invicta FC 6. Now that Maia has racked up back-to-back wins in her native Brazil, she is ready to challenge for the title. Bennett on the other hand has yet to lose as a pro and has finished four of her five opponents. This one should be exciting as the winner of this bout could find themselves fighter for the title in the very near future. Andrea Lee vs. Roxanne Modafferi Modafferi is a pioneer for women’s MMA and is considered by many to be one of the best flyweight fighters in the world. After a failed attempt to make the UFC as a bantamweight through season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter, Modafferi is back at her natural weight of 125 and is ready to make a statement. It won’t come easy as Lee is one of the best prospects on the Invicta roster and currently holds a record of 2-0 in her professional career thus far. Much like the Bennett vs. Maia bout, the winner here could be fighting for the title sooner rather than later. Tonya Evinger vs. Cindy Dandois In the co-main event of the evening, bantamweight contenders Evinger and Dandois take the cage to move one step closer to a title shot. Since being eliminated from TUF 18, Evinger has won back-to-back bouts including a first round submission in her last outing. Dandois on the other hand is returning to competition after an extremely long layoff. With the Invicta bantamweight title currently vacant, the winner of this bout will have the inside track on claiming the title in 2015. Michelle Waterson In the main event of the evening, Invicta atomweight champion Waterson looks to defend her title against Herica Tiburcio. Waterson is one of the premier women’s MMA fighters in the world today, but many fans still don’t recognize her name as she competes in the atomweight division. If you haven’t seen her compete, do yourself a favor and tune in to watch Waterson defend her title for the second time on Firday.
