Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in MMA. Week in and week out, fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters, others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week.

Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week.

This week’s Fight of the Week is Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier.

On Saturday, January 3, 2015 the UFC kicks off the New Year with a bang as pound for pound king and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his title on the line against heated rival Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.

Since becoming the youngest fighter to win a UFC championship, Jones has been a force of nature, defeating a Who’s who of MMA elite. Jones has defended his UFC title a record seven consecutive times and at just 27, he is just now entering the prime of his fighting career.

Jones has proven time and time again that his combination of wrestling, reach and unorthodox striking is unbeatable. But Cormier could prove to be the answer to the riddle that is Jones.

A two-time Olympian Cormier is one of the most decorated wrestlers in the UFC today and his striking is powerful. Cormier, who trains as AKA in San Jose, CA, has quickly developed into one of the most complete fighters in the sport since transitioning from wrestling.

On top of the fact that Jones and Cormier are two of the best fighters in the sport today, the anticipation for this bout has been heightened due to the utter dislike these two have for one another; a dislike that boiled over into brawl at a press conference back in August.

Jones vs. Cormier is one of the most highly anticipated bouts in UFC history and it can be seen live on pay per view on January 3rd.
