dkzAPT0T0MoThe MMA Corner Fight of the Week: Chidi Njokuani vs. Gilbert Smith RJ Gardner January 7, 2015 Events, Spotlight Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in MMA. Week in and week out fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week. Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week. This week’s Fight of the Week is Chidi Njokuani vs. Gilbert Smith. On Friday, January 9, 2015, Njokuani and Smith will battle it out for the vacant RFA welterweight title at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, CO. In 2014, the RFA established themselves as one of the premier regional MMA promotions in the US as they sent numerous fighters to major organizations; specifically the UFC. While winning the vacant RFA title would be a nice feather in the cap for either fighter, the real prize up for grabs on Friday is a chance to catch the eye of the UFC. Smith had a chance to make it with the UFC as a contestant on season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter, but lost in the elimination round to Luke Barnatt and then he lost to Robert “Bubba” McDaniel on the Finale; in both instances he was finished. Since his time on TUF Smith has gone 5-1 including two wins via submission. Njokuani on the other hand has yet to get an opportunity in the Octagon, but the young kickboxer has compiled a record of 11-4 with 1 No Contest. Much like his older brother Anthony, Chidi is a skilled technical kickboxing and with eight of his 11 pro victories coming by way of knockout Njokuani has proven he is dangerous on the feet. Keep a close eye on this fight as the winner of this bout will be fighting inside the Octagon sooner rather than later.
