Week in and week out fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week. Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week. This week’s Fight of the Week is Benson Henderson vs. Donald Cerrone. Conor McGregor and Dennis Siver may be headlining UFC Fight Night 59 on Sunday, January 18th but make no mistake the real main event of the evening is the lightweight showdown between Henderson and Cerrone. Even though Henderson has already beaten Cerrone twice, fans should be excited about this trilogy bout. Henderson is coming off of the first knockout loss of his career, but he is still one of the best lightweight fighters in the history of the sport and he is still very much in his prime. Cerrone on the other hand has won six straight inside the Octagon including his last bout on January 3rd…you read that right, Cerrone just fought at UFC 182 and he is stepping up to fight Henderson on short notice. It’s not uncommon for fighters to take fights on short notice, but Cerrone is taking this fight on short notice after fighting just fought a little over a week ago. When Cerrone steps into the cage on Sunday night he will be 15 days removed from his unanimous decision victory over highly touted prospect Myles Jury. A 15 day turnaround would be tough for anyone, but Cerrone is a gamer and he is riding a hot hand right now. Henderson is one of the best in the game, but Cerrone is a much more difficult matchup than the injured Eddie Alvarez. It’s going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.
