On Thursday afternoon, the UFC revealed a case of Pneumonia has forced Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza out from his scheduled UFC 188 bout with Yoel Romero. Jacare (21-3), a former Strikeforce champion, was looking improve on his already impressive seven-fight streak, which includes four straight under the UFC banner. In his most recent outing, fans saw the Brazilian walk away with third-round submission victory over Gegard Mousasi in the main event of UFC Fight Night 50 in September. He will enter this bout with 17 stoppage victories, including 15 by way of submission. Romero (9-1), an Olympic Silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, was last seen walking away with a controversial third round TKO victory over Tim Kennedy at UFC 178 in September. While both men were awarded the Fight of the Night bonus, Romero’s performance was largely overshadowed by events between the second and third round when it appeared Romero was given extra time to recover on the stool. Prior to this victory, fans saw ‘The Solider of God’ snap Brad Tavares’ five fight win streak at UFC on FOX 11 in April. He will enter this bout with eight career knockout victories and a UFC record of 5-0. The bout between Souza and Romero is expected to be rescheduled. UFC 184 is currently scheduled to take place on Feb. 28 at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. A middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort will serve as headlining act while a women’s bantamweight title fight Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano take place in the co-main event.
