Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in MMA. Week in and week out fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week.

Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week.

This week’s Fight of the Week is Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Johnson.

On Saturday, January 24th at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, Gustafsson and Johnson will meet in the center of the Octagon to become the number one contender in the UFC light heavyweight division.

For Gustafsson earning a title shot would mean earning a chance at redemption; at UFC 165 Gustafsson came up just short against reigning champion and pound for pound kingpin Jon Jones. Gustafsson pushed the champion to the limit and nearly won the title in their first meeting and he has been chomping at the bit for another title shot ever since.

For Johnson, earning a title shot would mean earning validation; just three short years ago Johnson was competing at welterweight and struggling to make the cut every time out. Johnson’s inability to consistently make weight cost him his job and hindered his ability in the cage. Now that Johnson has made the move to light heavyweight, he is riding an eight fight win streak with five wins by way of knockout.

Gustafsson and Johnson are two of the best in the world today and they both possess vicious power and unreal athleticism. Expect to see a spectacular fight on Saturday night.
