Felice “Lil’ Bulldog” Herrig faces Paige “12 Gauge” VanZant at UFC on Fox 15 this Saturday, April 18th, 2015. This is a pivotal fight for 2 women trying to stake their claim in the UFC women’s Strawweight division.

\Herrig is (10-5-0 MMA – 1-0-0 UFC) since making her transition from Kickboxing to MMA. While Herrig only has one fight under the UFC Banner, she has fought some of the top ranked Strawweights in the world (Jessica Rakoczy, Heather Clark (twice), Tecia Torres & former UFC Champion and BFF Carla Esparza). While Herrig does have 10 wins under her belt, 6 of those came by way of decision. Herrig has proven she has the heart to stand toe-to-toe with any fighter, but needs that killer instinct to finish her opponents when she has them in a bad position. With a dominant win of VanZant, Herrig could slingshot herself up into title talks.

VanZant (4-1-0 MMA – 1-0-0 UFC) is coming off a strong showing in November at UFC Fight Night 57, where she beat Kailin Curran by TKO in the third round after throwing Kailin to the mat and finishing her with ground-and-pound. VanZant was set to take part on TUF season 20 but was later denied due to the age restriction for the show (You must be 21 to compete on TUF & VanZant was only 20 at the time). VanZant was officially signed to the UFC after turning 21, without competing on TUF. This will be a true test for VanZant as she will now face one of the best female Strawweights in the world. This is a huge fight for Herrig & VanZant as they both need the “W” to prove that they are true contenders in the UFC women’s Strawweight division and not just two pretty faces.

The Keys To Victory For Felice Herrig:

Focus on The Task At Hand:

In the past, Herrig has put a lot of time and effort into being the “Hot Chick”. This is not a beauty contest, this is a fight. If Herrig can get past trying to be the “Hot Girl” and just fight, this will help her take it to the next level as an MMA fighter. So focus on the task at hand and that is VanZant. While VanZant has only 5 fights, she has proven that she is not scared of anybody and will throw down with the best of them. If Herrig can step away from the social spotlight and put all of her efforts into this fight, she will be able to control the fight and walk away with the win.

Take It To The Ground:

Herrig has a 100% take down accuracy with 3 submissions to her name. When she does go to the ground, Herrig seems to be able to control the fight, but has a hard time finishing. With that being said I think Herrig has more experience on the ground and will be able to control VanZant into submission, this will be safer than standing and banging with the younger faster VanZant.

Do Not Leave It Up To The Judges:

This day and age it is the worst thing you can do, “leave it up to the judges”. With only 4 finishes in 15 fights, Herrig needs to prove that she is a finisher and not just a scraper who never stops her opponents. If Herrig can take control fast, and get it to the ground, I think this will be a bad night for VanZant.

Prediction: Herrig Round 2 via submission.
