It looks like mixed martial arts fans will get to see two former UFC veterans do battle over under the World Series of Fighting banner this summer.

On Monday, during an appearance on The MMA Road Show with John Morgan, WSOF President Ray Sefo revealed the promotion was targeting a welterweight title fight between reigning champion Rousimar Palhares and former Strikeforce champion and UFC title contender Jake Shields for the main event of WSOF 22 on August 1 in Las Vegas.

“The main event for that will be Palhares vs. Jake Shields,” stated Sefo. “That has to happen in Vegas.”

For Palhares (17-6) this will be his second straight contest against a former UFC title contender. He previously submitted Jon Fitch just 90-seconds into their main event title fight at WSOF 16 in December.  Prior to this win, ‘Toquinho’ walked away with 69 second submission victory over Steve Carl in their title bout at WSOF 9 in March, winning WSOF’s 170-pound title in the process. He will enter this bout with 14 career submission wins, 11 of which have come from leg locks.

Shields (31-7) will be looking to make it three straight under the WSOF banner after scoring back-to-back first round submission over Ryan Ford and Brian Foster. Prior to this string of success fans saw Shields on the receiving end of a lopsided loss to Hector Lombard at UFC 171 last March that signaled the end of his run with the promotion, despite having gone 3-1-1 in his last five fights inside the Octagon. A former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Shields has defeated notables such as Dan Henderson, Tyron Woodley and Robbie Lawler over the course of his career, but he came up short in his lone effort at earning UFC gold against Georges St-Pierre in 2012.

WSOF 22 is expected to take place at thePlanet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
