Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in MMA. Week in and week out, fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week.

Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week.

This week’s Fight of the Week is the UFC lightweight tilt between Dustin Poirier and Yancy Medeiros.

On Saturday, June 6, 2015, the UFC heads down to the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans for UFC Fight Night 68. There Poirier and Medeiros will serve as the precursor to the main and co-main events of the evening.

A former top 10 featherweight, Poirier moved back up to lightweight following his loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 178. Many felt like this was a poor decision by Poirier as lightweight is the most talent rich division in the UFC today. But Poirier looked spectacular in his return to lightweight; knocking out Carlos Diego Ferreira in the first round while picking up a “Performance of the Night” bonus.

Medeiros on the other hand came into the UFC as an undefeated prospect through the Strikeforce merger. Things did not start well as Medeiros went winless in his first three UFC outings going 0-2 with 1 No Contest. Hanging on to his UFC career by a thread, Medeiros has won back-to-back fights by submission; picking up “Performance of the Night” bonuses in both outings.

This is a pivotal fight for both men in their quest to climb the lightweight ladder. The winner of this bout will likely be granted an opportunity to challenge a top 15 lightweight.

A tremendous matchup between two aggressive and well-roundedcombatants Poirier vs. Medeiros seems like a lock to be UFC Fight Night 68’s “Fight of the Night”.
