On Wednesday morning, during a segment on “Ireland AM,” UFC lightweight Joseph Duffy announced he will meet on Dustin Poirier in the main event of the upcoming UFC Fight Night 77 card in Dublin. The UFC would later confirm the news. Duffy (14-1), A native of Donegal, Ireland, is widely known as the last man to defeat current interim UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor when he slapped on a tight armbar just 38 seconds into their Cage Warrios FC 39 matchup back in 2010. He would eventually rattled off three more victories, pushing his win streak 10 straight to kick off his professional career. He also earned a first round submission over current UFC lightweight Norman Parke. Following his first professional loss, Duffy took a three year hiatus to purse a boxing career before returning in 2014 with back-to-back stoppage wins. Since making his return to the cage, ‘Irish Joe’ has has earned four straight stoppage victories, including a first round TKO over Jake Lindsney and first round submission over Ivan Jorge in his first two bouts under the UFC banner. Hiss opponent, Poirier (17-4), a Louisiana native, will be looking to make it three straight wins as a member of the lightweight division after walking away with a first round knockouts over Carlos Diego Ferriera and Yancy Medeiros. Prior to making the change in weight, ‘The Diamond’ wreaked havoc as a member of the UFC’s featherweight division, picking up eight wins in span of four years, including stoppages over Max Holloway, Diego Brandao and Akira Corasanni. In his last contest at 145-pounds, fans saw Poirier on the receiving end of a violent first round TKO at the hands McGregor at UFC 178 last September. UFC Fight Night 77 is currently set to take place on October 25 at The 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. The entire card is expected to stream live on UFC Fight Pass.
