Saturday August 8, 2015 the UFC traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, for UFC Fight Night 73, which featured a top light heavyweight matchup between #4 Glover Teixeira and #6 Ovince Saint Preux. Both fighters were looking to show they are title contenders and worthy of being ranked in the top five. Teixeira was coming off of a two-fight losing streak before this match up, and was looking to prove that he is still relevant in the division.

Saint Preux, a legacy Strikeforce fighter, came into this bout soaring in the rankings after two straight first round (T)KO victories over Pat Cummins and Shogun Rua. Saint Preux has won six of his last seven bouts prior to this fight, and was looking to show that his run in the UFC was a real one, and he means business at 205-lbs.

Other than the five round light heavyweight fight, UFC Fight night 73 featured a top lightweight war between #5 Michael Johnson and #12 Beneil Dariush, a middleweight battle between #15 Derek Brunson and Sam Alvey, a heavyweight fight between Jared Rosholt and Timothy Johnson, a top ten women’s bantamweight fight between #4 Sara McMann and #7 Amanda Nunes, and a flyweight scrap between #14 Ray Borg and Geane Herrera.

Main Card Summary

Ovince Saint Preux vs. Glover Teixeira

Round 1: They did not touch gloves and went right at it. Saint Preux threw a kick, but Teixeira caught it and ended it with a takedown. Saint Preux was able to get to his feet quickly though and Teixeira did not do any damage. Saint Preux then caught Teixeira with a hard shot and started pouring it on. It looked as if Saint Preux was going to end it, but Teixeira recovered and took Saint Preux down. Teixeira got into full mount and almost ended the fight. The first round was awesome.

Round 2: Saint Preux looked gassed at the start of the round and it showed as the round went on. Teixeira took him down and landed some very strong ground and pound. Teixeira was not landing much towards the end and Saint Preux got to his feet and landed some hard shots to end the round.

Round 3: OSP once again looked gassed to start the round and Teixeira came right at him. Teixeira was landing some solid shots, but Saint Preux seemed to be the better stand up fighter. Saint Preux then shot for a takedown for some reason and Teixeira reversed it and got Saint Preux to the ground. Teixeira then got into full mount and was looking to end the fight. He started to land some hard ground and pound which led to him getting Saint Preux’s back. He locked in a rear-naked choke and ended the fight.

Beneil Dariush vs. Michael Johnson

Round 1: Johnson took control of the octagon right away and was the aggressor. He kept coming in on Dariush and throwing strikes. Nothing was really landing and Dariush landed a couple good jabs. Johnson then landed a very strong counter punch that dropped Dariush. Johnson kept coming forward and landing some solid shots. Dariush seemed to be hurt at the end of the round.

Round 2: Johnson came right at Dariush to start the round, but Dariush landed a nice knee. Dariush seemed to be recovered from the first round. Dariush threw a head kick, but Johnson countered with a hard shot. Johnson started to tee off and find his range. Dariush still was working his jab and working it well. Johnson just seemed to be a step ahead. Johnson kept winning the exchanges to end the round.

Round 3: Johnson again just was one-step quicker than Dariush. Dariush was still working his jab and lading, but Johnson would land two strikes for every one of Dariush jabs. Dariush landed a nice knee again and started to dial in towards the end of the round. He was digging in and landing effectively. Johnson was still pushing forward and landing some very solid shots

Sam Alvey vs. Derek Brunson

Round 1: Sam Alvey started out the fight smiling at Brunson, but Bronson looked past the smile and tied Alvey up against the cage. He landed some very good uppercuts. Bruson then started to throw wild bombs and was landing at will. He caught Alvey with a great shot that dropped him and landed some bombs on the ground. The referee saw enough and had to jump in and stop the fight.

Timothy Johnson vs. Jared Rosholt

Round 1: Both fighters were feeling each other out early until Rosholt closed the distance and had Johnson up against the cage. Johnson then reversed Rosholt and took him down. Rosholt got right back up and Johnson controlled Rosholt against the cage until the referee split them up. Rosholt then took Johnson down and got right into full mount. He went for a choke, but was unsuccessful and got out of mount. Towards the end of the round Rosholt got Johnsons left arm trapped and landed a couple of shots.

Round 2: Johnson started to land some very good shots early in the round, but Rosholt tied him up and got him against the cage. Rosholt went for a takedown, but Johnson defended it well and landed some nice shots. He reversed Rosholt and controlled him against the cage until Rosholt did the same. Rosholt got Johnson to the ground once again and almost ended the fight with a submission, but Johnson held on.

Round 3: Johnson looked like he lost the first two rounds and camew out fast. Rosholt got him tied up again and got him against the cage. Ropsholt then took Johnson down once again. Rosholt did not do much and Johnson got back to his feet. Rosholy did control Johnson against the cage once again, but Herb Dean split them up because Rosholt did nothing. Johnson was head hunting and trying to get the KO. Johnson caught Rosholt with some nice shots and seemed to hurt him a little, but for some reason Johnson decided to tie up Rosholt. Rosholt reversed the position and controlled Johnson against the cage. Johnson separated and caught Rosholt with a hard shot and had him badly hurt. He caught him again, but then for some reason shot for the takedown and laid on top until the round ended.

Sara McMann vs. Amanda Nunes

Round 1: Nunes started out landing some very solid shots. McMann saw righg away that Nunes was the better striker and looked for the takedown. She was unsuccessful and Nunes landed some hard shots. Nunes then caught her with a hard right hand and it dropped McMann. Nunes jumped on top and got her back. She had some impressive ground and pound and then sh locked in a rear-naked choke.

Ray Borg vs. Geane Herrera

Round 1: Herrera ran right across the cage at Borg, but Borg took him down shortly after. Borg was trying to pass, but was unsuccessful for a while. Herrera was landing some good shots from the bottom. Borg was trying to get a guillotine and it looked as if he had it, but Herrera survived and then looked for a heel hook. The fight was more of a grappling match than an MMA match, but it was very competitive. Borg was trying to submit Herrera for a very long time, but did not finish the fight.

Round 2: The round started with both fighters finally throwing some punches, but then Borg shot for a takedown and secured it. Borg made a very aggressive move and used a one-handed guillotine choke to move into full mount. He was very close to finishing the fight, but Herrera held on. Borg stayed on top for good amount of time just trying to advance his position and submit Herrera. Borg was moving around well, but Herrera was showing great submission defense.

Round 3: Borg opened up with another takedown, but Herrera landed a strong elbow from the bottom and busted up Borg pretty bad. The referee stopped the fight to look at it and the fight continued. Borg continued to be dominant on the top and kept looking for submission. Herrera finally made a great move and swept Borg to get on top. He went for a guillotine, but Borg reversed it and got back on top. Borg just kept working for submissions. Borg got Herrera’s back with ten seconds left and it was not enough time to end it.
