Unlike other professional sports, there is no offseason in combat sports. Week in and week out fight cards all over the world are taking place. Some weeks there will be major fight cards filled with big name fighters others not so much, but there are fights taking place every week.

Regardless of whether the fighters are household names or not, The MMA Corner will preview the best fight taking place during the week.

This week’s Fight of the Week is a Bellator MMA lightweight bout between Melvin Guillard and Brandon Girtz.
On Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, Bellator MMA heads to the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif., for Bellator 141: Guillard vs. Girtz.

A late bloomer and tireless worker, Girtz is where he is today because of hard work and dedication. An above average high school wrestler. Girtz walked on to the wrestling team at NCAA Division II Minnesota State. Girtz would go on to become an All-American before his collegiate career was over. The dedication and sacrifice it took for him to achieve that level in college can be seen in his fighting style today; Girtz likes to wear his opponents down and hunt for submissions.

Guillard on the other hand was born with the kind athletic potential many athletes would love to have. But while he has been successful at time in his career for the most part, Guillard can be looked at as a cautionary tale to young fighters. Guillard had all the potential in the world, but he has yet to ever truly put it all together. But at just 32, Guillard is still young enough to go on a serious run.

This is a great match between a fighter with talent to spare and a fighter who has had to work hard for everything he has achieved.
