Friday night live from the Emerald Queen Casino & Hotel in Tacoma, WA, CageSport MMA and Brian Halquist Productions returns to action with SFL 44: Harrington vs. McIntyre. The card will feature two SFL America title fights, with Bobby McIntyre taking on Justin Harrington for the lightweight strap and Alfonso Gonzales vs. Thomas Hoeper for the light-heavyweight belt. The featured bout that is expected to entertain pits experienced featherweights Daneil Swain and Drew Brokenshire.

MAIN CARD SUMMARY

The evenings main event title fight for the SFL America Lightweight Championship. Bobby McIntyre came out with a spinning back kick that barely missed. The lead to a slug fest with Justin Harrington, with Bobby landing the bigger shots. Bobby scored a big takedown, but Justin tried to get a guillotine. Bobby fought it off and got Justin in a crucifix position landing several big elbows. For a brief moment the ref almost stopped the fight. Justin worked his way back to guard, an locked in a deep triangle choke that Bobby was unable to escape from. Justin Harrington wins by submission (triangle choke) at 2:25 of the first round.

The co-main event was for the SFL America 205 lbs title. Experience and age overcame youth and strength, as Alfonso Gonzales was able to not only comeback from losing round one to being on top, but landing big shots and ground and pounding his way to a TKO stoppage in the second round over Thomas Hoeper.

The most experienced fighters on the card is showcased by Daniel Swain in a featherweight bout opposite Drew Brokenshire. Daniel was the aggressor early in the round, coming forward with straight one-twos, and pressing Drew against the cage. During the second clinch he landed a knee to the body, and later scored a takedown. Drew was able to scramble to his feet, but only ended up against the cage again and eventually was taken down once more. Daniel worked some slow ground and pound, picking his shots and landing elbows from several top positions. Drew was unable to mount any type of offense, and after briefing getting to his feet was put right back on the ground. The end of the round saw drew get to his feet again and finally land some shots against Daniel against the cage before being pressed there again himself. Round number one goes to Daniel, 10-9.

Round two had Daniel throwing kicks early and not pressing forward like before. This allowed Drew to counter and go for a takedown, but in the scramble lose position with Daniel on top in the corner of the cage. There was some slight confusion about a strike, but neither fighter had issue and both seemed to protest the referee intervening. The action was resumed shortly after with both fighters starting on their feet. The end of the round ended with the consistent theme of this fight; Daniel on top and controlling the match, even attempting a choke and landing a solid knee, and Drew slowly fading in the fight except for a brief moment in the last 30 second where he seemed to try and attack again. Round number two goes to Daniel, 10-9.

Drew was more aggressive in the third, likely aware he is behind on the scorecards. Drew shot in for a takedown but transitioned it to a submission attempt from his back. He used this to work his way to the top briefly, but found himself back on the bottom and tapping to an armbar by Daniel. Daniel Swain via submission (triangle-armbar) at 2:04 of the third round.

The featured women’s catchweight bout pits undefeated Heather Denny (1-0) against five-fight veteran Jenny Liou (2-3). Jenny secured the clinch against the cage early int he first round and scored an outside leg trip takedown. Heather was able to get back to her feet only to be locked against the cage and get taken down again. Jenny ended up on top, but Heather went for an armbar from the bottom. Jenny was able to defend and end up in Heather’s guard, but not before taking some damage. From here Jenny was able to scramble to side control, and began attacking with an armbar of her own. She abandoned the submission and take Heather’s back. While trying to turn out of it, Jenny caught Heather’s arm and was able to secure the submission. Jenny Liou wins via submission (armbar) at 4:01 of the first round.
