On Saturday, Nov. 28, the UFC touched down in Seoul, South Korea for the first time in company history to bring fight fans UFC Fight Night 79 live from Olympic Gymnastics Arena

Henderson (22-5), also a former WEC champion , was last seen defeating Brandon Thatch with a thrilling fourth round submission in their main event matchup at UFC Fight night 60. This marked Henderson’s first bout as a member of the welterweight division. Prior to making the jump up in weight classes, “Smooth” earned a record of 9-3 as a member of the UFC’s 155-pound division, which includes decisions Frankie Edgar, Nate Diaz, Gilbert Melendez and Clay Guida.

Masvidal (28-8), a former Strikeforce lightweight title contender, will also be looking to make it two straight since making the jump up to 170-pounds. Prior to meeting Henderson in Seoul, “Gamebred” walked away with a violent first round knockout over Cezar Ferreira in July. The American Top Team product previously competed at lightweight where he amassed a record of 5-2.

MAIN CARDY SUMMARY

Benson Henderson vs. Jorge Masvidal

Henderson and Masvidal meets up in the middle, touch gloves with Herb Dean between them. Then the fights starts with them touching gloves again, circulate each other. Masvidal assumes the position of octagon control. Benson lands a jab. Benson moves around the octagon. Masvidal eats a bodykick, but goes after Benson regardless and lands a kick to the body of Benson himself. Benson lands a right hook, then goes for one to the body of Masvidal. Masvial lands another body kick. Benson lands a crisp straight shot down the middle that lands on the stomach. A lot of movement in the octagon as thy keep exchanging blows. Masvidal gets dropped by Benson as he comes in for a flying knee. They clinch up, before Benson gets free. Masvidal assumes octagon control again, lands a hard bodykick. The last minute, they stand in the middle and Benson throws rear-legkick that lands. Masvial gets another bodykick on Benson and a flying knee. Benson catches his leg and tries to take him down but fails. Round ends as they split up.

Second round starts out with them meeting up in the middle o the cage. Masvial moves after Benson in typical Muay Thai stance and starts throwing kicks, Benson attacks back with strikes. Nothing significantly lands yet for anyone. Masvidal tries another flying knee that doesn’t land. Benson lands a kick that gets caught by Masvidal and they go to the ground. Masvidal is on-top on Benson as they get back up, and they start throwing bombs in close distance of each other. Then they clinch up in the middle of the octagon, Masvial presses Benson to the cage. Benson turns it around. Throws shoulder-shots on Masvidals face from the position. Knees from Benson lands before they split up. They exchange blows, but both block them successfully. Henderson tries for a highkick that hardly lands. Benson shoots for a single. Masvidal locks on to the neck, tries for a guillotine. They go down, just a second later they go back up. Benson has Masvidal on all fours and kneed him until the end of the round.

Third round starts, they meet in the middle again. Benson lands a front kick to the face of Masvidal. They move around a lot in the octagon. The output from both is secondary from the movement. Benson lands a good bodykick from his left leg. Benson throws a left jab that lands in on the stomach of Masvidal. Benson goes for a takedown attempt against the cage. Masvidal defends, but Benson throws elbows as he tries for a takedown. But Masvidal reverse the position and tries for his own takedown.They scramble a lot as they are pressed against the cage. The go blow for blow with knees until Masvidal eats one knee to the groin, and a time out is called by the referee. They start up again, exchanging kicks. Benson keeps landing the jab down the middle. Masvidal lands a right rib-kick . A lot of movement is going on in this round. Benson throws a hard leg-kick followed up by a left hook that lands. Masvidal throws a hard body-kick. Benson eats his own groin-strike just seconds before the end of the round can happen.

Round four. They meet again in the middle of the cage. Benson switch stances, but eats a right hook from Masvidal for his efforts, but gives one right back.  They exchange blows, Benson shoots for another takedown. But taking Masvidal down seems hard. He struggles. Masvidal is pressed up against the cage. They are clinched up and exchange elbows from the inside. Benson circles out, they go blow for blow again just before clinching up once more. This time they go down, but it is Benson who ends up in in the worse position for only a split second. Benson gets another takedown, but only for a second as then Masvidal gets up and clichies up with Benson. Benson has a kimura defense as they sink down to the ground. Masvidal  by default, ‘lands’ a takedown, and is on top of Benson as Benson tries and to stand back up. Which he does. They meet in the middle, Masvidal throws spinning heel-kick that just touches air. Benson throws a flying kick and a superman-punch just before the round ends as we go to the last round.

The audience claps and whistles in support of the main event fighters as they begin the last round. They touch gloves, Benson starts with a jumping sidekick. Masvidal lands a fine knee to Benson stomach. Benson jumps with a flying knee, as he goes for a takedown against the cage. Masvidal defends and stays busy in the clinch with open pawn-strikes. Then high elbow guillotine for Masvidal looks very tight on Beson. Benson goes to is back and the ground as Masvidal goes for it once more. But this time, it looks like Benson is not in any danger. They are up again against the cage, trading knees in close courters. This times Benson throws the open pawn-strikes. Masvidal throws a spinning backfist and a hard knee as Benson goes for a takedown. Benson presses Masvidal against the cage and knees him to the thighs. They scramble once more, Benson lands on top for a second as they stand up again. They switch position faster than I’m able to type. Benson again, presses Masvial against the cage. Masvial goes down from a take down, Benson tries to take his back, but Masvidal escapes, last 30 seconds and they scramble against the cage. Masvidal goes for a takedown as the bell rings and signals the end of the fight.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Dominic Waters

Kim and Waters touch gloves in center, start feeling each other out. Kim throws a highkick that lands slightly. Waters punches Kim back, forcing him to the cage and tries for a takedown, moves in position for Kims back. Kim throws Waters with a Judo-throw, lands in a position for a crucifix. Kim keeps pounding the face of Waters while Waters is stuck in the position.  Kim doesn’t lose the position when Waters tries to get himself free. Elbows rain down on the face of Waters. Switching back and forth with punches and elbows. The referee gives Waters a long time to get out of that bad position before stopping the fight in Round 1, 3:11.

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alberto Mina

They meet in the middle of the Octagon, touch gloves, feeling each other out with some jabs. Akiyama takes control of the center, give a leg kick just to immediately after get one back from Mina. They keep exchanging leg-kicks for the first minute of the bout. Akiyama lands a spinning back-fist, Mina takes it and goes after him. Mina start moving backwards, change pace and move forward again. They stand in the middle of the octagon again. Octagon control is for Akiama when the middle of the round has passed. They keep going one for one on the leg-kicks, and throwing in some few jabs in between.  When Mina takes the middle of the Octagon, Akiyama takes it back quick. Mina misses with a overhand right and a straight punch. After every attack Mina throws he gets octagon control, but Akiama always gets it back quick. In the last minute in the round Mina looks for a take-down, that gets defended by Akiyama. Mina lands a right hook on Akiyama, goes for a takedown in the last ten seconds of the round that lands, before the bell rings.

Round two starts, and Akiyama takes the center again, they feel each other out with jabs and outside leg kicks. Mina throws overhand right on the outside. Akiyama pressing Mina to the fence and throws some offense. Mina tries for a takedown but fails. Akiyama keeps getting control of the center of the octagon. Akiyama throws an uppercut, the most significant strike of the fight beside the legkicks, as Mina ducks right in to it. The audience shows support for Akiyama by shouting ‘Akiyama’. Mina takes back the center just to eat a jab for his efforts and gets forced to move backwards again. Mina attacks, but always moves backwards after each one of his attacks. Mina tries for a takedown after Akiyama throws a leg-kick, but fails. Mina is back on the outside again. Moves in for a successful attack, straight left and a right that lands. Last minute of the round and Akiyama gets kicked in the groin when they exchange front-kicks, he drops to his knees. Akiyama takes his time to recover. They get back to fighting and Akiama takes octagon control, Mina attacks but misses. They face of in the center. Akiyama goes upstairs with a highkick. Mina attacks with punches and rocks Akiyama, Akiyama drops. Mina throws ground and pound. Akiyama stands up and tries to run away while Mina keeps throwing hard shots from behind Akiyama back at his face while running after him. Round is over and Akiyama gets saved by the bell.

Last round is going to start and the crowd roars in excitement, they touch hands in the middle, exchange straight rights. Mina misses with hooks, Akiyama throws leg kicks. Mina attacks successfully with left- right hooks Akiyama lands a uppercut. Mina misses with a spinning backfist. Mina tries to take Akiyama down. Akiyama lands a one two straight. Mina tries for another take down, but fails. Mina’s legs looks badly damaged from Akiyamas legkicks. Akiyama tags Mina with punches. Mina drops to his back at any chance he gets. Mina stands back up, attacks Akiama. Lands some jabs. Akiyama lands jabs of his own. They are crisp. Mina goes for anther takedown, but Akiama lands on-top and starts throwing ground and pound that keeps landing on Mina. Akiama stands up, forcing Mina to stand back up. Mina keeps eating Akiyama’s jab. Mina tries another takedown, fails again badly this time. Mina is having trouble standing back up. Mina throws desperate takedowns, fail, and doesn’t look at Akiyama as he sneaks up on him to land some punches from behind, on the ground. The round is over and the crowd goes ballistic for Akiyama.

Doo Ho Choi vs. Sam Sicilia

Both fighters touch gloves, Choi takes the center of the Octagon. Choi drops Sicilia early after landing a sharp punch down the pipe. Sicilia gets up quick and give a big punch back. They tangle in the middle of the octagon. They break up, catching their breaths. Sicilia hunts after Choi. Choi meets him with a punch and drops Sicilia with a right hook followed by a left hook before finishing Sicilia off with punches on the ground.  The fight gets called by the referee in Round 1, 1:33.
